Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe wants to add a set-piece specialist to his backroom staff, and the Magpies have put out an advert as they look to hire a set-piece coach.
The Toons assistant manager Jason Tindall is currently in charge of set pieces at the St James’ Park club, and he has done a fine job so far, but Howe wants to emulate his Arsenal counterpart, Mikel Arteta, and recruit the services of a set-piece coach.
Only six Premier League clubs scored more from dead-ball scenarios than Newcastle this season, and only Aston Villa, Manchester City and Brentford conceded fewer goals from set-pieces than the eight goals they shipped.
Nevertheless, the Magpies boss wants his squad to get better in dead-ball situations, and applicants, who must possess a UEFA A licence and have significant experience of set-play coaching, have been told they have until June 16 to apply.
Newcastle ended 2024-25 with the Carabao Cup and a place in the league phase of the Champions League next season after finishing fifth in the Premier League table, and they want to have a better campaign next term.
They are set to lose sporting director Paul Mitchell at the end of this month, but it will not affect them in the transfer window from the look of things.
Arsenal set-piece coach Nicolas Jover has helped improve the fortunes of the Gunners at both ends of the pitch with his expertise, and Howe is now looking to follow the same route Arteta took.
Newcastle will not be short of applicants and will take their time before selecting who they think will be the best man for the job.
The Toons want to bolster their squad depth by signing a right-sided forward, a centre-back, a goalkeeper, a striker to play alongside Alexander Isak and possibly another central midfield player if one is sold this summer, and Howe is also working behind the scenes to strengthen his coaching team.
