Chelsea Make First Approach in Race to Sign ‘One of the Best in the World’ Star Goalkeeper

Chelsea ended their 2024/25 campaign on a high note by winning the UEFA Europa Conference League title and also securing a top-four finish in the Premier League. They are now ready to build a strong squad for the next season and seem to be eyeing a goalkeeper signing in AC Milan man Mike Maignan.

Chelsea Make Approach to Sign Mike Maignan From AC Milan

What Is Maignan’s Current Status?

Fabrizio Romano has reported that the Blues have now officially approached the Serie A heavyweights about the possibility of signing the French goalkeeper in the summer window. The reporter further claims that the Premier League heavyweights are aware that Maignan has not been able to agree on a new contract with AC Milan so far, with his current deal set to expire at the end of June, 2026.

Romano has also added that Maignan has always been high up on Chelsea’s list of potential goalkeeper targets. The clubs are now in talks over a possible move and the final decision will be up to the Italian side on whether they want to entertain the possibility of selling their highly rated goalkeeper or not. With that being said, the possible fee that Chelsea might have to pay for France’s no.1 has not been clarified yet as Maignan gears up to help his side win the UEFA Nations League award, with a semi-final encounter against Spain on the horizon.

What Can Maignan Bring to Chelsea?

If they’re able to seal this deal, then the Blues could be getting a highly-talented goalkeeper who has a lot of experience under his belt too. Maignan, who came up through Paris Saint-Germain’s youth academy, made over 150 appearances for Ligue 1 side Lille before joining AC Milan in 2021. He has gone on to win the Serie A and Supercoppa Italiana titles with the Rossoneri, winning the Serie A Best Goalkeeper award in the 2021/22 season and Serie A Team of the Year on two occasions.

The 29-year-old has kept 59 clean sheets in 163 appearances for AC Milan, which includes 15 clean sheets in 53 games in the 2024/25 season. Not only that, but he has kept 16 clean sheets in 30 games for France, and was named in the Euro 2024 Team of the Tournament for keeping four clean sheets in six games! Maignan is an admirable shot-stopper who can come up with clutch saves and is also impressive with moving the ball at his feet. The Frenchman was hailed as “one of the best in the world” by Liverpool man Alisson Becker last season, as his arrival could displace Robert Sanchez from the starting goalkeeper spot at Chelsea and add more security to the Blues’ backline.
