Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams has entered early negotiations to extend his stay at San Mamés, despite strong interest from Premier League clubs Arsenal and Chelsea.
The 22-year-old, one of Spain’s most promising attacking talents, is reportedly discussing fresh terms with his boyhood club, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.
Williams currently has a €58 million (£49 million) release clause in a contract that runs until June 2027. However, a new deal could strengthen Athletic Bilbao’s position amid growing transfer interest from across Europe.
Arsenal, long-time admirers of the winger, are believed to be pushing hard to land his signature this summer. Manager Mikel Arteta is said to have personally spoken with Williams to pitch his vision for the club’s future, which has reportedly made a strong impression. Yet, the financial demands of a potential deal, including wages and agent fees, pose a challenge, not only for the Gunners but also for Chelsea, who are monitoring the situation.

Williams enjoyed a standout 2023/24 campaign, helping Athletic lift the Copa del Rey and playing a key role in Spain’s triumphant Euro 2024 run. His pace, versatility, and flair on either wing have drawn praise from across the continent. In December, former Real Madrid boss José Mourinho described the youngster as “unique” and “wonderful”.

Despite tallying five goals and five assists in 28 La Liga appearances this season, Williams’ campaign was partially disrupted by injury, sidelining him for key matches, including the Europa League semi-final against Manchester United.
While Barcelona have cooled their interest, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have recently emerged as potential suitors. Madrid reportedly see Williams as a long-term replacement for Rodrygo, while Bayern are evaluating him as part of their summer rebuild.

Athletic Bilbao remain determined to keep their prized asset. Head coach Ernesto Valverde has expressed optimism about Williams’ future, citing the club’s close-knit culture and the player’s strong connection to Bilbao. The winger himself recently reaffirmed his affection for the club, saying, “This atmosphere, I’ll never have it anywhere else. I decided to stay because of that.”
Though recent speculation suggested Williams was preparing for a move amid claims of house-hunting in London and farewells to teammates, the current contract discussions have cast doubt on any imminent exit. Qualification for next season’s Champions League could further persuade Williams to commit his future to Athletic.
Arsenal’s new sporting director Andrea Berta is reportedly leading efforts to secure the winger, with the club viewing Williams as a “central figure” in their summer transfer plans. While the €58 million release clause is seen as good value, the Gunners face stiff competition and financial complexities.
