According to an exclusive from Fabrizio Romano earlier today, Chelsea have “approached AC Milan to sign Mike Maignan”, which sounds like quite something though probably isn’t quite anything, certainly not at the moment.
As per subsequent reports, such as from the BBC, Chelsea are simply keeping tabs on the goalkeeper’s contract situation. Maignan has been in talks with his club over a new deal, but has yet to agree. Now, with just one year left on his current contract, there thus may be an opportunity to get him. “Contacts have started” and Enzo Maresca “has approved Maignan as a key target”, says Romano in a later tweet, for whatever that’s worth.
EXCLUSIVE: Chelsea approach AC Milan to sign Mike Maignan as new goalkeeper.
Mike Maignan has still not signed new contract at the club and Chelsea are now aware of the situation.
He’s always been high on Chelsea list with clubs in talks, decision up to Milan. pic.twitter.com/hrgd7xNpbH

Romano adds that Maignan “has always been high on Chelsea list”, and sure enough, we’ve been linked with him for at least half a decade. Back in 2020, we balked at the €35m price tag set by Lille, and would end up signing Édouard Mendy from Rennes instead — that worked out pretty well, in fairness, though not for too long. And that has meant new links with Maignan in the last two transfer windows as well. Despite signing more goalkeepers than I can remember, we have still not really found a new number-one at the position since Thibaut Courtois snaked off to Real Madrid in 2018.
Maignan has been good for a long time, but is still just 29 and that’s pretty young for a goalkeeper. But is he someone of “the very highest calibre”? I’m not so sure...
Chelsea are keen on AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan. Seen as a potential opportunity. Club only willing to sign a goalkeeper if they can get one of the very highest calibre. Happy to continue with Sanchez, Jorgensen, Petrovic and/or Penders if it is not viable. pic.twitter.com/WHloH8jr0t
