The Phoenix Suns are ready to move on from Kevin Durant. That has been the idea, at least, since the 2025 NBA Trade Deadline.
With the Suns' disastrous 36-46 season in the 2024-25 campaign, changes are certainly needed. Holding onto the the aging veteran superstar does not make a ton of sense considering the lack of team success.
At 36 years old, Durant only has so many elite seasons left in the tank. This has forced the Suns front office to make calculated decisions with their asking price for the two-time NBA Finals MVP.
Kelly Iko, a regional reporter for The Athletic, offered some insider information on the development of Durant's trade market. The reporter suggested the Suns are softening up on the asking price of their superstar.
Iko wrote, “Phoenix is aggressive in pursuit of a) trading Kevin Durant and b) regaining full control of their draft capital starting with the No. 10 pick in next month’s draft, team sources said."
The NBA writer added, "Since the conclusion of the season, Houston has fielded several calls from Phoenix, who have since gradually lowered their asking price for Durant, those sources said."
Iko concluded with the following regarding Houston, specifically: "There is a price where the Rockets would be interested, but with a fear of breaking up their roster for a 36-year-old coming off injury, doubt remains over a deal materializing.”

Durant averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.2 blocks, and 0.8 steals per game, while shooting 53-43-84, in 2024-25. That kind of production should still warrant a significant return.
However, the report suggests that Phoenix could just be happy to get out of the situation and regaining control over their future again. The offseason will soon answer the question of what goes down in the desert this summer.
