Steelers Not Expected to Trade For Pro Bowl Dolphins TE

A recent report from ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter had the Pittsburgh Steelers expressing interest in Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith. The prospective deal surrounding Smith is looking for a new deal, and the Dolphins are unwilling to give it to him.

However, a new report from Schefter pointed out that the Steelers were no longer in on the Dolphins' tight end. "Pittsburgh has been seeking additional receiving help," writes Schefter, "and has inquired about, but is not expected to trade for, Miami TE Jonnu Smith."

Smith is in the final year of his current deal, and is looking for a pay raise. The Dolphins, unwilling to give him said raise, are open to moving the veteran tight end. The only known team connected to Smith was the Steelers, but Schefter's new report shuts down that possibility.

In 2025, Smith is under contract for $4.6 million and is looking for more money after a great 2024 season. With the Dolphins in 2024, Smith was named to his first Pro Bowl in 8 seasons in the NFL.

He played in all 17 games, and hauled in 88 receptions on 111 targets for 884 yards and 8 touchdowns. Smith also secured 55 first downs, more than double his previous career high.

After bouncing around the NFL from 2020 to 2024, Smith found a strong role with the Dolphins. Even though he was a huge part of the Dolphins' offense in 2024, he only played 626 snaps, around 55% of the offensive snaps from the Dolphins in 2024.

There is more room for Smith to grow, and after a great first season in Miami, Smith is looking for a pay raise and more work going forward. While the Dolphins are balking at a contract extension and looking for trade avenues, the Steelers have backed out of the Smith sweepstakes.

If Smith is traded, according to Schefter, it won't be to the Steelers. There will be other teams interested in Smith after his great 2024, but for now, there are no known teams interested in the Dolphins Pro-Bowler from a year ago.
