Sunderland could struggle to compete financially next season after securing their return to the Premier League.

The Black Cats beat Sheffield United 2-1 in the Championship play-off final on 24 May to book their place in the top flight.

Football Insider revealed on 29 May Sunderland’s hierarchy will make “big” funds available for a summer transfer overhaul.

Regis Le Bris’s side finished fourth in the regular season before going on to win the play-offs despite losing each of their last five league games.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Sunderland could boost their revenue by up to £150million next season.

The Black Cats’ turnover improved from £35.5million in 2022-23 to £38.2million in 2023-24.

Sunderland told to accept relegation

Borson insisted Sunderland could struggle to remain in the Premier League next season.

He told Football Insider: “They are just going to have to accept the likelihood of relegation, bank as much money as they can from being in the Premier League, as much money as they can from the parachute payments and try and get back up again.

“It’s not attractive for fans, but it is probably the reality where you’ve had this growth phase back to the top given where Sunderland were for a couple of years.

“They are just going to have to take it steady.

“Obviously, if they can somehow get themselves a very strong home form, win eight or nine home games, you can have a pretty good chance of staying up, but it’s not easy to do.

“Their revenue will go up by something in the order of £120-150million total because commercially as well it should be quite attractive for Sunderland.”
