The Athletic: Arsenal eyeing move to sign ‘special’ England international, could cost £80m

Arsenal could make a move to sign Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon in the coming months, according to reports - with the Gunners keen on bolstering their attacking ranks to finally get their hands on either the Premier League or Champions League trophies after coming close to both last season.

Mikel Arteta is set to have a budget of £300m to spend this summer, as our sources revealed earlier in the summer - and with upgrades needed on Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard, as well as backup for Bukayo Saka, that could make Gordon the perfect candidate to move to the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners could look to land the Magpies star although it would take a big bid

The report by The Athletic states that Newcastle are hoping to retain their 'elite' players, especially after qualifying for the Champions League - with Gordon being named as part of that cohort. He has been named alongside five players who are simply not for sale on Tyneside, being cherry-picked alongside Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes - and so it could cost Arsenal a lot of money if they were to sign the 'special' star, as he was coined by Guimaraes.

The Gunners are 'finding other ways' to improve their attacking threat, and although there is speculation over incomings, a player who is adept on both sides could be targeted. Gordon fits the bill, and although the report has further linked Nico Williams and Rodrygo from Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid respectively, it further states that Gordon is another player that they like - though the England winger could command a high fee.

Newcastle paid Everton a fee of up to £45million for his services in January 2023, having scored seven goals in 65 games for the Toffees in the Premier League - but his form has massively increased at St. James' Park with 17 goals and 21 assists in the top-flight over the past two seasons.

Alongside Harvey Barnes, the Magpies have a strong duo on that flank, and a disruption to their progress would be one of the last things on Eddie Howe's agenda. But Arsenal are in need of improvements themselves, and Gordon's age, potential and experience in the Premier League could make him the perfect candidate for Arteta.
