David Moyes looking to raid his former club Sunderland as Everton consider move for £20m star - …

Everton boss David Moyes has emphasised his desire to recruit in the Championship this summer transfer window.

Speaking earlier this year, David Moyes insisted that the second tier is home to a number of future Premier League stars and Everton will be shopping in that market going forward.

“I know we’re in a world where we can pick players from any continent to play in the Premier League,” the Scotsman explained. “A long time ago, it wasn’t as easy and maybe people didn’t look as far.

“We continue to look closer to home, which is the Championship. Last year, the Championship produced some incredible players like (Morgan) Rogers, (Adam) Wharton, (Jaden) Philogene possibly.

“The Championship is always a place we should be looking to see. With the position we’re in, we could do with a couple of seasoned players but if not, we need to get players in to help with the numbers etc.”

Moyes is already trying to put that in action as Everton weigh up a move for Sheffield United’s Gustavo Hamer.

Now, they’re looking at a Sunderland player who starred in the promotion-winning campaign.

Everton interested in signing Sunderland star Trai Hume

With Ashley Young leaving Everton and Seamus Coleman not getting any younger, Moyes is in the market for a right-back.

The Toffees have been eyeing Brighton’s Tariq Lamptey and were named as frontrunners to land his signature, but those rumours have gone quiet.

Now, according to Sky Sports’ reporter Dharmesh Sheth, Sunderland’s Trai Hume is emerging as a target.

“Wolves, Everton and a number of La Liga clubs are interested in Sunderland defender Trai Hume,” Sheth explained.

“The Northern Ireland international made 48 appearances in all competitions last season as Sunderland were promoted to the Premier League.

“Hume joined Sunderland in January 2022. His contract runs until 2027 with Sunderland holding the option to extend for a further year.”

The 23-year-old was a key fixture of Regis Le Bris’ side last term, making 48 appearances and registering a commendable nine goal involvements from right-back.

Le Bris says Hume is a true ‘warrior’

One of the key components of Moyes’ teams is having players who will fight, which sounds basic but not every team possesses it.

The Scotsman has always recruited players who are not just technically very sound but also physical and up for a battle.

Le Bris certainly thinks Hume has those attributes.

“He’s really well balanced and if he can add this ability to his game, it changes his profile towards the next level,” the Frenchman said in April.

“Trai is a warrior – even if he has an injury he wants to play.”

Sunderland are expected to command a £20m fee to sanction his sale, so it’s certainly a feasible deal to do for the cash-rich Toffees.
