Insider Says Tom Thibodeau’s Future With Knicks ‘Hasn’t Been Decided’

The New York Knicks didn’t reach their ultimate goal of a championship this year, but that doesn’t mean they’re ready to make drastic changes.

Yes, adjustments could be coming to the Knicks, but fans will see many familiar faces next year.

That might include head coach Tom Thibodeau.

Speaking with Zach Lowe, Ian Begley talked about Thibodeau’s future with the Knicks.

It sounds like he will be leading the team next year, but nothing is set in stone yet.

“If I’m betting, [Tom Thibodeau is] back ultimately. But I can tell you, for sure, that hasn’t been decided at least to my knowledge yet. The obvious name is not out there. If they did decide to move on, the obvious ones are going to be Jay Wright, [Mike] Malone, but nobody who’s obvious if we’re going to make this coaching change,” Begley said, via New York Basketball.

Begley to Lowe on Thibs: "If I'm betting…he's back…But I can tell you for sure hasn't been decided at least to my knowledge yet…(9:45am Monday)…Obvious name not out there if they did move…Jay Wright…Malone…but…kinda similar qualities to Thibs…others but no…slam dunk" pic.twitter.com/ZxF2SAbspq

Thibodeau has now been in charge of the Knicks for five seasons, getting them into the playoffs multiple times and bringing them close, but not close enough, to the Finals this year.

There have been plenty of qualms about Thibodeau and his coaching style, including how much he pushes his players.

However, he is obviously producing results, just not enough of them.

Thibodeau might be back next season, but he could be on thin ice if the team doesn’t take the next, final step and compete for a championship.

As noted by Begley, there are potential replacements floating around the team, which isn’t a particularly great sign for Thibodeau.

Meanwhile, the roster could see some changes in the summer, giving Thibodeau a different cast of characters to work with in 2025-26.

So, he will probably be back, but the Knicks could transform in the offseason.
