Manchester United’s goalkeeping situation remains a point of concern as the club heads into a pivotal summer under Ruben Amorim.

Andre Onana has failed to fully convince fans or the coaching staff, with a string of high-profile errors and shaky performances clouding this season at Old Trafford.

While the former Inter man was backed before moving to United, his inconsistency has raised doubts about whether he’s the long-term solution between the sticks.

Altay Bayindir, meanwhile, is reportedly looking to leave the club in search of more regular game time after making just a handful of appearances during the 2024/25 campaign.

That leaves Manchester United in the market for a new goalkeeper.

However, their shortlist appears to be shrinking fast.

Over at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea are undergoing a goalkeeping reset of their own.

Robert Sanchez endured a difficult season and is widely viewed as one of the weak links in the Blues’ spine.

While Djordje Petrovic – despite some solid showings at Strasbourg on loan, has also been offered out to clubs across Europe.

Manchester United set to miss out on Mike Maignan and Vanja Milinkovic-Savic

Chelsea had already identified Mike Maignan as their primary target to replace Sanchez and are now pushing forward with a move, according to Alfredo Pedulla’s report.

The Milan star’s contract expires in just over a year and, crucially, no agreement on an extension has been reached.

Chelsea have reportedly secured the approval of the French international, and are now preparing an official offer to AC Milan.

The knock-on effect for Manchester United is clear.

Maignan had been monitored as a potential successor to Onana.

However, Chelsea’s fast progress puts them in pole position.

Making matters worse for United, Milan are lining up Vanja Milinkovic-Savic as Maignan’s replacement.

Milinkovic-Savic has previously been scouted by United’s recruitment team as an affordable and experienced option.

With both Maignan and Milinkovic-Savic now likely off the market, United’s window to reinforce their goalkeeping department is narrowing.

And unless a surprise deal materialises, Andre Onana could still be the man trusted in goal when the new campaign kicks off.

That may not be the scenario many fans were hoping for.

However with Chelsea moving swiftly and decisively, United may have to turn their attention elsewhere or double down on Onana’s redemption.
