David Moyes simply has to land 28-goal striker Marco Silva branded 'a top goalscorer' - opinion

Everton are already gearing up for the 2025/26 season, and the club are targeting players for most positions in the team.

Everton are prioritising four positions just at the moment, with right-back, right wing, central midfield and striker the main focus.

But realistically, Everton have to look at all areas of the side, with a number of players having already left the club.

Everton have already confirmed they are signing Carlos Alcaraz permanently.

But fans are now expecting the club to be very busy in the coming days.

There is particular excitement about the signing of a new striker, because Everton were found wanting in the final third a lot last season.

And one player Everton are now looking at is Aleksandar Mitrovic – and past comments from Marco Silva may give David Moyes some encouragement.

Mitrovic left Fulham in the summer of 2023.

He had spent five-and-a-half years at Craven Cottage after leaving Newcastle United, and scored 111 goals in 206 appearances for them.

His move to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia was thought to have been worth about £50 million, which was obviously a very good sale by Fulham.

But now he could be heading back to the Premier League.

And former Everton manager Marco Silva is someone who obviously knows him very well. Before he left for Saudi, the Portuguese had said of him (via Evening Standard): “He’s a top goalscorer. We helped him and were able to get the most out of him over two seasons, like no one has done before.

“That is the reality. We all know what Mitrovic was like when we arrived, when the team played in the Premier League when the club was relegated.

“But the market is open and everyone is looking for strikers. If you want to get a good striker, of course I believe that [clubs will look at] Mitro.”

Silva also heavily praised Mitrovic back in October 2022, after the Serbia striker went on a run of nine goals in 11 matches.

“He is just doing what we did last season,” Silva said (as quoted by the Independent). We are preparing him in the same way, we are preparing the players around him in the same way.

“The numbers of Mitrovic are unbelievable, they are outstanding. Since I arrived in this football club, in 57 games he scored 52 goals. It is an unbelievable number for a striker.”

Mitrovic could be a great option for Everton

Some fans have urged Everton to steer clear of Mitrovic due to the apparent asking price of around £40 million.

But the 30-year-old – who scored 28 goals in 2024/25 – might just be a good signing for Everton if the Toffees can negotiate that price down a fair bit.

He’s obviously played in the English top-flight previously with Newcastle United and Fulham, and fans have seen him thrive with his physicality.

Everton were looking at Liam Delap before he decided to join Chelsea, and Mitrovic would be a similar kind of battering ram player to lead the line.

Perhaps he’s not someone Everton should be looking to have leading the line as their number one striker, but he could certainly be a good rotation option and someone the fans would really warm to.
