Chelsea closing in on the capture of 19-year-old defensive sensation from Ligue 1 club

RC Strasbourg defensive sensation Mamadou Sarr is reportedly closing in on joining sister club Chelsea in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by French outlet L’Equipe, Mamadou Sarr is the subject of interest from Chelsea. The Blues are scouring the market for a centre-back heading into the summer transfer window. So, they have set their sights on their sister club for a solution, with the teenage prospect emerging as a target.

The Blues expect to formalise the move for the Frenchman soon, and they will likely have the young centre-back available for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup. Chelsea expected Sarr’s arrival at Stamford Bridge since the winter, but “the date of his arrival in England was still shrouded in mystery”.

Who is Mamadou Sarr?

Mamadou Sarr has made considerable progress since joining RC Strasbourg from Lyon last summer. A native of Martigues, the 19-year-old spent his formative years in France, passing through the academies at ES Saint-Laurent-Blangy and RC Lens before graduating from Lyon’s youth division. However, the youngster has risen in prominence during his spell with Strasbourg.

The French defensive sensation amassed nearly 2,500 minutes of game time in 28 appearances across all competitions while chipping in with one assist. Meanwhile, Sarr’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known outfits across Europe. However, the player will move between the two sister clubs in the summer transfer window, with Chelsea set to sign him.

London calling?

Chelsea wanted to sign Mamadou Sarr in the winter transfer window before the deal failed to see the light of day. The continued interest in the youngster is hardly surprising, considering the West London club’s hoarding policy. The teenage sensation is now on the verge of joining Chelsea in a cost-effective deal this summer.

Chelsea will seal the deal for the 19-year-old Frenchman imminently, and he will travel with Enzo Maresca’s squad for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup this month. Maresca’s staff will monitor the young defender’s performances before deciding what they want to do with him.

If the Blues do not keep Sarr in their first-team squad, he will return to RC Strasbourg for a season-long loan spell this summer. So, it will be interesting to see how the French centre-back fares with Chelsea at the Club World Cup.
