Report: David Moyes has identified a ‘problem’ area he wants fixed at Everton this summer

Everton are planning to improve their squad this summer, but they are also preparing for several departures.

With the Toffees moving into their new stadium next season, there is a clear desire to bolster the squad and add more talent to bring into the new era.

David Moyes will be backed by the Friedkin Group, who are willing to splash the cash to give the 62-year-old what he wants. The shackles of PSR have finally been removed, and Everton can spend with much more freedom, unlike previous transfer windows.

It is no surprise that Moyes wants to improve four positions at Everton, with the Scot eyeing a new centre-back, right-back, central midfielder and striker for the 2025/26 campaign.

While signings will be made, players are expected to leave or be sold. Jarrad Branthwaite has interest from Chelsea and Tottenham this summer, but Moyes is adamant he will not leave.

Branthwaite’s exit would surely cause problems for Everton next season, but a new transfer report has stated how Moyes actually feels about his back-line options as the transfer window progresses.

David Moyes’ opinion on Everton’s defensive options

While Branthwaite’s future is still unknown, Michael Keane is expected to leave Everton this month upon the expiry of his contract. The 32-year-old has spent eight years on Merseyside but now looks like he will be forced to find a new club this summer.

Despite that, there is the suggestion that Moyes is a fan of Keane and may still offer him a new deal on Merseyside.

Even with Keane potentially leaving, Moyes is not too worried about his defence. According to the Athletic, Moyes is pleased with his defence and even sees it as a “strong point”.

The report states that Moyes now wants to build on a solid foundation at the back. Elsewhere, goals have been the real problem for Moyes’ Everton, who could soon be without a quality striker for the new season.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is not close to agreeing a new deal, and preferred striker Beto has interest from Leeds United after scoring eight goals in 30 Premier League games this season.

The situation has improved, but not enough to make Moyes second-guess bringing in a new striker.

How much Everton can spend in the summer transfer window

A transformative summer could be on the horizon for Everton if they play their cards right. Backing from the Friedkin Group means they are ready to give Moyes what he wants as the club enters the new era.

After dropping their PSR struggles, Everton are in a position where they can spend a sizeable amount of money on new players.

Everton have already confirmed Carlos Alcaraz’s signing, and there could still be several more arrivals before the start of the season.

According to financial expert Kieran Maguire, Everton can spend between £50-£100m this summer, but that is without player exits.

The Toffees will be due a much larger transfer budget if player sales do occur. For example, Branthwaite would give Everton £70m, but it is a deal Moyes is very reluctant to do.
