Winners and losers from a Christian Eriksen transfer to Wrexham include Rob McElhenney - opinion

Wrexham are thought to be interested in bringing Christian Eriksen to the club this summer.

Wrexham wanted to sign one Manchester United player already this summer, but that move was quickly quashed.

The Dragons were linked with an interest in veteran centre-back Jonny Evans, but it’s since been confirmed that the stopper is retiring from football following his final appearance for the Red Devils last week.

In what is a pretty shocking turn of events, though perhaps not given the reach of the club now, it’s since been claimed that Phil Parkinson wants Christian Eriksen at Wrexham.

The Dane is out of contract at the end of June, and we have now taken a look at the biggest winners and losers from a potential deal.

Winners from Christian Eriksen transfer to Wrexham

Phil Parkinson

The initial link said that Parkinson was trying to bring Eriksen to the club, and it’s easy to see why.

The former Sunderland manager has always tried to sign experienced players who have proven themselves at a higher level.

But when compared to other rumoured targets such as Ben Davies and Aaron Cresswell, Eriksen is just on a completely different level.

MORE WREXHAM STORIES

He has been a top Premier League midfielder for many years and helped Inter Milan win the Serie A.

His legs may have gone slightly, but Eriksen’s game has never been about pace, and there’s no doubting that he would absolutely rip up the Championship if signed.

Sam Smith

Arguably, the biggest winners from a potential Eriksen transfer would be Sam Smith.

Wrexham fans have expressed sorrow toward Smith since his arrival, with the striker often left isolated up front with minimal service in a number of matches.

This lack of service has been in part due to a lack of proper creativity through the centre of the pitch.

One journalist felt sorry for Smith in a match this past season after he hardly touched the ball, but if Eriksen were to sign, he would no doubt get a lot more chances in 2025/26.

Rob McElhenney

The Wrexham co-owner has made very clear his desire to go for yet another promotion in the coming campaign.

Rob McElhenney played down the idea of consolidation last month despite the club not having played in the second tier since the 1980s.

Securing promotion out of the Championship is by far and away McElhenney and Co.’s most difficult task yet, but the arrival of a player like Eriksen would certainly go a long way to achieving that dream.

Losers from Christian Eriksen transfer to Wrexham

Matty James

A former Manchester United player himself, Matty James impressed when he was initially signed to a short-term contract by Wrexham in October 2024.

The midfielder did enough to earn himself a new deal, keeping him in Wales until the summer of 2026.

James has become a regular feature in the first team but has primarily occupied the deepest role in the midfield three, which Eriksen would likely take behind more energetic options such as Ollie Rathbone and George Dobson.

George Evans

George Evans has been a key player for Wrexham in the past, having a crucial role in their promotion out of League Two.

However, the 30-year-old only made seven League One appearances for a total of 131 minutes, and the arrival of another midfielder would surely mean he needs to be sold this summer.

Wrexham’s 27-man squad is already too big for the Championship (25), and fringe stars like Evans will have to make way.

Andy Cannon

Andy Cannon suffered an unfortunate long-term injury in 2024/25 that saw him miss the end of the campaign and promotion.

Cannon was solid for large periods before his issue, scoring two in 24 League One matches.

But like James, he will fall down the pecking order if Eriksen signs.
