Juventus, Cristiano Giuntoli part ways after two seasons

On the eve of Damien Comolli’s tenure at Juventus officially beginning, Cristiano Giuntoli officially saw his time in Turin come to an end.

One door closes and hopefully a better one is about to open. At least that’s what we want.

Then again, that’s what we thought when Juventus hired Giuntoli from Napoli two years ago. Instead, it’s all over after a two-year run that was much more disappointing than it was a replication of what we saw during his time in southern Italy. On Tuesday evening, it officially came an end, as Juventus announced that the club has parted ways with the 53-year-old Giuntoli, whose time in Turin will be remembered for his big swing and a miss in hiring Thiago Motta and then firing him after just 10 months in charge and a summer transfer window in 2024 that included €200 million in spending but some high-profile disappointments.

The statement on Juventus’ website regarding Giuntoli’s department was incredibly brief, saying the following:

Juventus and Cristiano Giuntoli announce that they have mutually agreed to the termination of his employment contract.

The decision was based on a joint assessment of future perspectives and mutual priorities.

Told you it was brief, folks. There is getting to the point, and then there’s that. The official press release announcing Giuntoli’s departure was a little longer ... but not by much.

Turin, 3 June 2025 – Juventus Football Club S.p.A. (“Juventus” or the “Company”) announces that it has reached an agreement with Cristiano Giuntoli for the mutual termination, as of today, of his football director contract.

The decision has been reached by the parties following a joint assessment of future prospects and mutual needs. The Company also confirms that Francesco Calvo has resigned, as from 16 June 2025, as Managing Director Revenue & Institutional Relations to pursue a new professional project.

As of today, based on the information available to the Company, Cristiano Giuntoli and Francesco Calvo do not hold any Juventus shares.

So, when you drop a line like “The decision was based on a joint assessment of future perspectives and mutual priorities” then you know it was very much not a simple finish to the 2024-25 season no matter how multiple front office members tried to spin it. Just in the same way that Giuntoli said that Motta’s job was safe in the month or so leading up to his firing, Giuntoli’s standing only became the more uncertain regardless of Juventus’ Champions League qualification.

And, as it turned out, that wasn’t enough to save his job.

No matter how much this will be spun as something that was a mutual decision, it is becoming increasingly clear that there was a divide amongst the decision makers at Juventus and that is a big determining factor in what we’re seeing play out with Giuntoli leaving and Comolli coming in. More additions — be it a sporting director or potential manager not named Igor Tudor — are expected in the relatively near future as the squad prepares to head over to the United States for the Club World Cup later this month.

Financial details of what Juventus will owe Giuntoli in this “mutual” parting of ways. Giuntoli earned a reported €1.6 million net salary and had two years left on his contract that he signed in the summer of 2023.
