The Pittsburgh Steelers are not expected to land Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Smith, who wants a new contract from the Dolphins, was mired in trade rumors last week when the Steelers inquired about him. Schefter shut that down on Monday, and Smith intends to stay in Miami.
Smith wants a reworked contract. He is scheduled to make $4.8 million this season but would like that number to be increased. If the Steelers did land Smith, it would have been an odd fit, considering the team had already paid Pat Freiermuth last year.
Smith was a Pro Bowl selection in 2024 for the first time in his career. He set career-highs last year with 88 receptions for 884 yards and eight touchdowns in the Dolphins offense. All of those marks were franchise records.
Smith, 29, will turn 30 in August. He and Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith have many connections throughout history. In Tennessee, the player-coach duo worked together for four seasons from when Arthur Smith was a tight ends coach to when he took over as the team’s offensive coordinator. Jonnu joined Arthur in Atlanta for one season, too.
The Steelers remain on the hunt for another wide receiver, though, and will host wide receiver Gabe Davis for a visit on Thursday.
