College soccer player Chase Stegall, who played on the DePaul University soccer team, has unexpectedly died. He was 20 years old.
“We are devastated to share the passing of our brother, Chase Stegall,“ the DePaul men’s soccer account posted on Twitter. ”Our heartfelt condolences are with his family, friends and everyone who knew him and loved him. He will forever be a Blue Demon."
Stegall died on Monday, June 2 at Sanctuary Hall on the university’s Lincoln Park campus, according to The DePaulia.
The Atlanta native appeared in 16 of DePaul’s 17 games this past season, recording 10 shots, seven shots on goal and one goal. He finished with 369 minutes played on the year. He was entering his junior season.
Chase Stegall is the son of former NFL receiver Milton Stegall, who played college football at Miami (Ohio), before playing professional football for 17 seasons.
Milton Stegall played for the Cincinnati Bengals, Green Bay Packers and New Orleans Saints, in addition to spending time in the Canadian Football League.
He was named a CFL all-star nine times.
DePaul Director of Athletics DeWayne Peevy and head men’s soccer coach Mark Plotkin also released a statement about Chase Stegall dying.
"We are heartbroken by the unexpected loss of Chase Stegall, a cherished member of our community, dedicated teammate and kind-hearted friend,“ the statement reads. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Chase’s family, friends, teammates and all who loved him.
“In the coming days, we will support Chase’s family and teammates through this devastating time. His loss will be deeply felt across our entire Athletics and university family and his memory will forever be a part of DePaul University.”
