FLORHAM PARK -- The New York Jets are in the process of completing OTAs this week at the team facility. For the third time during offseason workouts, reporters were allowed to watch practice.
And from our perch? There is plenty to report.
A skirmish, some uneven quarterback play bailed out by unreal catches, and an underrated edge rusher are just some of the major points of emphasis from Tuesday's practice.
Let's get to the biggest takeaways now.
Justin Fields' Uneven Day What we have seen from Justin Fields through practices is what people have been discussing about the quarterback since he was a first-round pick by the Chicago Bears in 2021.
Tuesday was pretty much the same.
There are some balls thrown where Fields looks excellent. He has a big arm, and when he is confident in where he wants to go with the ball, it looks like any legitimate starter. The issue is that he's too inconsistent.
Multiple times in practice it looked like Fields was processing too long and missed some open receivers. His location was also very inconsistent as well.
What you see is what you get with Fields. We'll see if more practice time can speed up his internal clock once the pads come on, though.
Garrett Wilson's Catch of Camp It was a relatively quiet day for New York's top offensive player outside of a truly absurd catch.
Going up against Michael Carter II, Wilson leaped into the air and plucked the ball off of Carter's helmet. The pass was late, it was great coverage on Carter's part, and Wilson still found a way to make the catch.
In case it wasn't already obvious, Wilson is a special player.
Mason Taylor Continues to Shine It's hard for any rookie tight end to make an impact on a team right away, but second round pick Mason Taylor is doing just that. He made numerous catches in 7-on-7 work and got open effortlessly.
It didn't matter if it was throws deep over the middle, or short-routes, Taylor has the kind of athleticism and understanding to get open that is above where many rookies are at this point.
After practice, coach Aaron Glenn raved about the improvement Taylor has made as a run blocker, not just as a receiver.
There is a very good chance that he is going to be an impactful player right away in this Jets offense. If Taylor is able to build off a practice like this, the sky will be the limit for him.
Intensity Heats Up Practice had to be stopped on Tuesday due to multiple skirmishes in team drills. Glenn didn't seem to be too bothered by it. He just emphasized the point that OTAs wasn't the time to have these kinds of skirmishes and that there was bigger work to get done.
It is clear, though, that this Jets coaching staff has increased the intensity from prior years under a different regime. The players have responded to that well. ...
And so you'll get some fights alongside the highlights.
Undervalued Edge Rusher Steps Up Tuesday's practice did see several defensive linemen not in attendance. Will McDonald and Michael Clemons were absent. Jermaine Johnson has been away on the rehab side as he recovers from a torn Achilles.
Meanwhile, free agent acquisition Rashad Weaver really stepped up in a major way. He would have had multiple sacks in team drills had pads been on, and was a force throughout the sessions.
We'll see how he looks when the pads come on, but he was a big winner from today.
