Man Utd might have two key players for Amorim’s system, now they need to reach another level

Manchester United’s transfer window is dominating discussion to such an extent that it is being forgotten that the club might already have two key players for Ruben Amorim’s system.

The need for a large-scale rebuild is not lost on anyone at Old Trafford, least of all Ruben Amorim, who has now warned multiple times that changes are coming at Man Utd.

Rightly so, given the club has just seen its worst-ever season in the Premier League era, and one to rival the low points before that era as well.

However, despite a wretched season, it won’t be an exaggeration to say that the Man Utd manager might have two players who are key to his system if they reach the next level.

Ruben Amorim has a key Man Utd duo waiting to break out

Man United struggled under Ruben Amorim but a silver lining is that the manager now knows his team inside out before making a decision on their future.

A minor positive from the season is that barring a few players who are relics of the Glazer era, this is still mostly a young team that can be moulded into something good.

Two players who personify that youthful excitement also play in positions that form the crux of Amorim’s system.

One’s Patrick Dorgu, the January signing who has been exactly as advertised – a physical monster who needs polishing on the ball but has all the raw tools to dominate.

The other is someone who isn’t even necessarily a wing-back but might need to be for the team to be at its best, that is Amad.

United’s transfer activity already hints at how Amorim views Amad’s long-term position, and now it is up to the Ivorian to make it his own and add an attacking thrust.

Amad and Patrick Dorgu can reach another level

It is clear how important the wing-backs are to making Amorim’s system work so it’s fortunate that United have two fine prospects for those positions.

The case for Amad to reach another level is straightforward. Despite a breakout campaign, he was hampered by injuries and uncertainty over his position.

If he starts the next season with a clear mind of succeeding as an attacking right-wing-back, free of injuries, there’s no reason why he doesn’t end the season with double figures in goals and assists again.

For Dorgu, more care is needed as well as some tactical learning. The Dane is more of a project than Amad, but nonetheless a key player.

He has shown glimpses of being a dynamic wing-back while getting adjusted to a new team in a new country that wasn’t doing very well.

Now that he has had six months at United, expect him to come flying out for the pre-season en route to a breakthrough next season much like Amad had this time around.

Amad and Dorgu can be the flying wing-backs United’s next great team is built upon.
