The rumor of Chelsea’s supposed interest in goalkeeper Mike Maignan appears to be developing quite swiftly, with Daniele Longo and Ben Jacobs both reporting tonight that a bid is being prepared after the France international conveyed that he would happy to join the Blues.
The exact figures of the bid vary, with Longo claiming that it’s €25m, and Jacobs saying it will be somewhere between £20-25m with “some add-ons on top”. Regardless, it would be a relatively cheap fee for a goalkeeper of his stature, no doubt helped by Maignan’s contract situation and Milan’s failure to qualify for the Champions League.
While there are doubts over Maignan’s shot-stopping and cross-claiming abilities, with his form taking a dip since 2022, he is still one of the best distributors of the ball around, and that’s probably playing a role in the Chelsea decision-makers’ minds. (In addition to Maignan, we have seemingly enquired about James Trafford of Burnley too, but that interest has not gone anywhere.)

Maignan’s arrival would pose questions for the future of Robert Sánchez at the club, with the Telegraph positing towards a sale of our current number-one goalkeeper.
It would also cast further doubt over the future of Đorđe Petrović, with the BBC noting that he is attracting a lot of interest. Filip Jörgensen, however, is expected to stay at the club, likely as a second-fiddle. (Meanwhile, Mike Penders’ immediate future will be determined after the Club World Cup, while Kepa Arrizabalaga is hoping that someone will take him in for good at long last.)
