PHILADELPHIA — It’s a great story.
The Eagles were fresh off a Super Bowl victory over the great Patrick Mahomes and the mighty Kansas City Chiefs, which was fueled by a dominating performance from the defense.
According to some of the defensive players, however, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio was still critical of the performance because the Eagles allowed two touchdowns in the final three minutes.
“Unacceptable,” was the word rookie edge rusher Jalyx Hunt used to describe Fangio’s late-game defensive performance.
“He wants perfection,” Hunt said on a @PHLEaglesNation podcast.
Speaking to the media for the first time this offseason, Fangio was asked about his critical review following one of the most dominating defensive performances in Super Bowl history.
“That was fake news,” Fangio said. “Never did that. I actually brought them together on that day to compliment them on how well they played in that Super Bowl. There was not a negative word spoken. Fake news.”
For the record, the Eagles held the Chiefs scoreless until their were 34 seconds left in the third quarter, which trimmed their lead to 34-6. By the time the Chiefs scored again, it was 40-6 and head coach Nick Sirianni had already decided to sit the offensive starters for the remainder of the game.
When the Chiefs scored their final TD on a Mahomes pass to Xavier Worthy with 1:48 remaining, the Eagles’ defensive reserves were on the field.
Mahomes was sacked a career-high six times in the game and intercepted twice. The Eagles also held the Chiefs to 49 rushing yards, the team’s second lowest total of the season.
