Railston: United winger Jadon Sancho has been handed double embarrassment

From the high of winning a European trophy, to the disappointment of failing to agree terms with Chelsea.

Jadon Sancho will not be joining Chelsea on a permanent transfer, which means the Blues will now pay a £5million penalty charge to Manchester United to break the agreement.

It's unprecedented for a club to pay £5m to break their obligation agreement and the ordeal is embarrassing for Sancho, whose career has sadly nosedived over the last few years.

Sancho was an England international and one of the most exciting players in Europe when he arrived at Old Trafford. His decline began after signing for [Manchester United](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/all-about/manchester-united-fc) and he failed to arrest his slump at Chelsea.

The London-born lad scored in 4-1 victory against Real Betis in the Conference League final and will argue his loan was a success. Sancho will point to scoring in that game and his winner's medal. It's also important to note the move has collapsed due to Chelsea not being willing to meet his wage demands.

That doesn't necessarily mean Chelsea don't want Sancho, but it does mean they don't believe he is worth the salary, and maybe that wouldn't have been an issue if he'd performed better.

Sancho's contribution of five goals and 10 assists has been deemed not good enough for the wages he wants and Chelsea are set to move on to Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund.

Chelsea want to sign Gittens in a £50million deal before the Club World Cup and Sancho should probably feel further embarrassment over that transfer for two different reasons.

The first reason is that Gittens has leapfrogged Sancho, despite having been years behind him.

Dortmund visited Leigh Sports Village to play United Under-19s in March 2022 and won on penalties, but a 16-year-old Gittens scored a brace in normal time and was the star of the show.

At that time, Sancho had already spent eight months in Manchester after signing from Dortmund in a £72.9m transfer. He was regarded among the world's finest players, while Gittens was a teenager playing in front of a sparse crowd.

The second reason is that Gittens is represented by the same agency - Elite Project Group - as Sancho. They know each other well and their career pathways have been similar.

Sancho and Gittens both played in Manchester City's academy before joining Dortmund. There have been comparisons made between the pair and Gittens has given the impression of being a miniature Sancho.

However, 'little brother' could surpass 'big brother' if he joins Chelsea this summer.

Sancho will probably be happy for his agency stablemate Gittens and he might even advise him about what to expect at Cobham, although the optics of the move are not great for him.

Gittens was just 16 and hadn't had a sniff of senior football when Sancho signed for United, so far apart were they in their careers, but that is clearly no longer the case.

It must be said, Gittens always seemed destined to become a top player, but Sancho hasn't maintained his top player status and looks set to be surpassed by Gittens.
