According to Ian Begley of SNY, Thibodeau is owed at least $30 million in guaranteed money from the three-year contract extension he signed just last summer.

Begley also reports that Thibodeau will not remain with the Knicks in any front office role.

The team's end-of-season review process was reportedly different this year, with "top players" brought into meetings that included team owner James Dolan.

Those meetings ultimately led to the decision to part ways with Thibodeau. Knicks president Leon Rose made the call, and Dolan supported it.

Thibodeau guided the Knicks to a 51-31 record in the 2024–25 season, securing the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference.

In the playoffs, New York defeated the Detroit Pistons 4–2 in the first round and upset the Boston Celtics 4–2 in the East semifinals before falling 4–2 to the Indiana Pacers in the conference finals.

Thibodeau made the playoffs in four of his five seasons with the Knicks and compiled a 226–174 record overall. The 2024–25 campaign was his most successful with the team.
