Newcastle United are expected to be active in this summer’s transfer window after resolving their PSR issue.
A leading football finance expert believes Newcastle United can spend up to £200million on new signings this summer.
Newcastle were on the brink of breaching Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) last June before negotiating the sales of Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion, respectively, for a combined £68million.
Despite complying with the rules and avoiding an inevitable points deduction, there has been little wiggle room to fund new signings.
Eddie Howe’s squad has gone three consecutive transfer windows without welcoming a major signing. The group was further weakened in January when Miguel Almiron re-joined Atlanta United for a reported £12m while Lloyd Kelly moved to Juventus on loan with a £20m obligation to buy.
The funds raised through those sales, plus the fact the 2022 summer transfer window - where United forked out around £130m on recruiting the likes of Nick Pope, Sven Botman and Alexander Isak - will drop off the three-year PSR cycle, has put the club in a healthy financial position.
How much can Newcastle United spend in this summer’s transfer window?
When appearing on the Loaded Mag NUFC YouTube channel, football finance expert Kieran Maguire was asked how much Newcastle could spend this summer. Factoring previous spending under the current ownership and the club’s current financial position, Maguire predicted between £150m to £200m.
Maguire said: “Well, if we take a look at the first three years of PIF being in charge of Newcastle United, the spending was £150m, £153m and £206m. There was less spending in 24/25 because of the constraints of PSR. I would anticipate Newcastle moving into that £150m to £200m bracket.”

What has Eddie Howe said about the summer transfer window?
Speaking after the final game of the 2024-25 season against Everton last month, Howe said: “As far as I'm aware, we have no PSR issues that are heading into this deadline. I have to put that in there because I'm not seeing the figures and I'm only relaying what I'm getting told.
“I think we're in a lot healthier position, a lot stronger position. And we're looking to reverse what we did last summer where we're in a strong position ourselves to make additions to the squad.
“I think all summers are massive. It's very difficult to put one ahead of the other but I think when we haven't been active in the market for so long, in the manner that we want to be active, then there is a danger that you go over a line that the squad weakens because you haven't been doing what you need to do to refresh the group, to challenge the players with new players coming in.
“I think it's a summer that we have to do that. I know there's a tension throughout the club to do that, and that is the plan.”
