Manchester United opened their transfer window with purpose and initiated a swap deal with West Ham United of attacking midfielder Mohammed Kudus and winger Jadon Sancho.
Kudus joined West Ham in 2023 and was willing to move to Old Trafford. Meanwhile, Sancho is currently on loan at Chelsea. He had no future with Utd and was willing to go to the Hammers. Chelsea are uncertain about making his move permanent. Utd were keen to find a backup plan and that’s where the Kudus swap came in.
Talks between both clubs were confirmed by transfer insider Graeme Bailey. But, the talks soon broke down due to West Ham’s doubts. They were about how Sancho would fit into their squad and tactics.
West Ham Likely to Sell Kudus, But Not to Utd
Despite the collapse of the swap deal, West Ham are still planning to sell Kudus this June. They want to raise funds for their own transfer targets. The Ghanaian is one of their most valuable assets after scoring five goals and assisting three times last season.
But, Red Devils’ interest in him has cooled, especially after locking in moves for Matheus Cunha. In addition, they are making progress on a deal for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo. Although, Kudus was on their radar as far back as last summer. But, they opted for Mason Mount instead, missing the chance to secure the talented playmaker from Ajax.
Now, Ruben Amorim has a packed attacking lineup and other financial priorities. So, the club is unlikely to revive their interest unless the situation shifts dramatically. The idea of a straight swap with Sancho was a tempting shortcut. But, with West Ham backing away, that option has fade out for good.
