Super Bowl Lix brings $1.25B economic impact to Louisiana; Saints say long-term deal is near

BATON ROUGE, La. (WVUE) - New Orleans Saints and state officials announced Tuesday (June 3) that Super Bowl LIX delivered more than $1.25 billion in economic impact across Louisiana, a figure that more than doubles the revenue from the city’s last time hosting the event in 2013.

At a news conference held at the Louisiana State Museum, officials from the Saints organization, state government, and economic development agencies outlined the financial windfall brought by the February event, while also indicating that a long-term deal to keep the Saints in New Orleans is nearly complete.

“We are close,” Saints owner Gayle Benson said when asked about the status of ongoing negotiations with the state. “I don’t know the specifics, but I feel very good about it. I’m excited.”

According to an LSU economic impact study, the game generated:

* $1.25 billion in total economic activity

* $658 million in visitor and vendor spending

* $395 million in wages for Louisiana workers

* $82.7 million in state and local tax revenue

* 9,787 jobs supported statewide

* 115,000 total attendees, including 100,000 from out of state

“$83 million in new state taxes. Those are the funds that build schools and roads and pay for public services,” said Michael Hecht, President and CEO of GNO, Inc.

Governor Jeff Landry called the event “a tremendous success” and praised the opportunity to showcase Louisiana on a global stage.

“Hosting the Super Bowl is so much more than a football game,” Landry said. “It’s an opportunity to drive an economic impact that is both immediate and long-term. We seized the opportunity to showcase Louisiana, and we scored huge.”

As Saints officials and state leaders continue work on a new agreement, the franchise’s current deal with the state remains in effect for another five years. Leaders emphasized that finalizing a long-term commitment is key to securing future Super Bowls, potentially as soon as after 2028.
