Brazilian defender Gabriel Magalhaes is close to agreeing a new contract with Arsenal.

His current deal is due to expire in 2027, but the club were keen to offer him improved terms amidst continued interest in him from the Saudi Pro League.

He has made 210 appearances for the Gunners since he was signed from French club Lille in 2020, and has developed into a leader both at the back and offensively from set pieces. It is no coincidence that Arsenal conceded more goals from set pieces and scored fewer of their own after his injury incurred against Fulham in the Premier League brought a premature end to his season.

However, he is expected to be fit for the start of the new campaign, and he will also be hoping to feature in the plans of the new Brazil manager, Carlo Ancelotti with the World Cup on the horizon next year.

Andy is an exiled English football fan living in Cyprus. He loves all sports but football is his abiding passion, and he still has dreams every now and then about scoring the winning goal in a Wembley Cup Final, even though his playing days are long gone. He follows most major leagues, across Europe at least, and has a favoured team in each. When he’s not watching, listening, reading or downloading podcasts about football, he spend his time worrying about his beloved Arsenal.
