Julian Nagelsmann has given the green light for Florian Wirtz to play for Germany amidst intense transfer speculation linking him with a move to Liverpool. The 22-year-old midfielder, currently in talks over a sensational switch from Bayer Leverkusen to Anfield, is not being sidetracked by the ongoing negotiations, according to the national team coach.
Wirtz is gearing up for Germany's UEFA Nations League semi-final bout against Portugal, even as Liverpool's pursuit heats up. Despite Leverkusen rejecting two hefty offers from the Merseyside giants, who value Wirtz at an eye-watering £126million, Nagelsmann remains unfazed and ready to deploy Wirtz on international duty.
Nagelsmann dispelled any concerns on Tuesday, asserting Wirtz's readiness: "Flo will play [against Portugal].
"I don't sense any fear of injury or anything with him. He's a competitor who wants to play and be successful with us.
"I didn't notice that the situation was bothering him. I think it's perfectly normal for every player, coach, whatever, to have one or two thoughts when a transfer is imminent. I think that's part of it."
With Bayern Munich and Manchester City out of the running, Liverpool stand alone in the chase for Wirtz, who has flourished under the tutelage of Xabi Alonso, a revered former Liverpool player.
Fans are invited to weigh in on the debate about Liverpool's chances of sealing the deal for Wirtz.
On Tuesday, it was revealed that Arne Slot had a meeting with Rayan Cherki, also a target for Liverpool, to honour a prior commitment made before the Wirtz negotiations progressed. Wirtz remains the club's top target.
Nagelsmann claims the ongoing saga is not affecting Wirtz mentally. However, the player responded to reports suggesting he wants the number 10 shirt if he joins Liverpool.
The number 10 is currently worn by Reds midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, who joined the team from Brighton two years ago.
Wirtz took to social media to dismiss the reports, saying: "Who says I want the 10. I respect players. Don't believe everything what's written," accompanied by a clown emoji.
