Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes revealed the true reason behind rejecting the offer from Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal. Al Hilal targeted Fernandes during the summer and made him and Man United a lucrative offer, which the 30-year-old rejected.
The decision has divided the United fanbase, as the majority are happy with the impressive show of loyalty from Fernandes. However, there is a minority which wants the lucrative deal to happen, considering the uneasy financial situation United are facing.
The Red Devils have made many controversial cost-cutting decisions to improve the financial health of the club in recent months. At the same time, United have to back new manager Ruben Amorim with a considerable squad overhaul during the summer.

The Red Devils finished 16th in the Premier League last season, something they need to avoid happening again next season. The United squad’s failure to adjust to Amorim’s style of play acted as a mitigating factor for the new manager.
The club has decided to thoroughly back Amorim, and they need to prove that by buying players he tactically requires. The daunting task is the limited transfer budget that United has, forcing them to sell players before buying new ones.
Speaking to reporters (via Metro), Fernandes highlighted the reason to stay at United and reject the lucrative offer from Al Hilal. He said:
“There was an opportunity. The president [of Al-Hilal] called me and asked if I wanted to go there. They were waiting for me. I spoke to coach [Ruben] Amorim and he asked me not to go. My wife asked me what I wanted to do. It would have been easy to move there as I know the Portuguese players there very well, but I want to play at the highest level and compete for major titles.”
Al Hilal offered a fee of £100 million to United for the services of Fernandes, a tempting offer. Fernandes further highlighted that the club assured him that they don’t need the money and that they want him to stay. He added:
“Manchester United didn’t want to sell me. They don’t need the money”
