Davide Ancelotti has put Rangers on "standby" according to reports in Spain – with a view to replacing Inter target Cesc Fabregas at Como.

It looks for all the world as if Russell Martin will be the man the Ibrox side turn to as their next permanent boss with Ancelotti now falling behind the Englishman as distant second favourite for the job.

Reports over the last 24 hours have indicated the former Southampton boss is the man and it now looks as if it will take another big twist in the tale for the sea to change.

Reports in Spain in Italy have so far been firmer on the Ancelotti interest than in the UK, but with the news emerging that he's no longer the main man, Marca have changed their tune.

They suggest that the pivot away from the Italian may be as much down to Ancelotti's camp as the decision-makers at Ibrox.

It's claimed that, with Arsenal legend Fabregas now one of the frontrunners for the Inter job after Simone Inzaghi's exit for Al-Hilal, Ancelotti is now hopeful of landing the top job at the ambitious Serie A side.

It's claimed that Como see him as a good fit and that Ancelotti now wants to see how that will play out before deciding his next move.

Reports had initially suggested Rangers would have to be quick to land the Italian – but it now may be the case that Ancelotti will have to make up his mind.

Because if Rangers, a job we understand he was desperate for after meeting with Andrew Cavenagh, are now his backup option, then they will need to hear positive noises from him soon as talks with Martin enter their final stages.

Como finished 10th in Serie A last season and are spending big with European football in their sights in the near future.

It's a big job but without the relentless pressure to win every week, it's proved to be a good first-time gig for Fabregas. That, as well as the fact it's a top flight gig in his homeland, may be what has attracted Ancelotti to the post.
