Jonathan David has opened the door for Newcastle United with interesting plea - opinion

Jonathan David would be the perfect answer to Newcastle United’s striker problem.

The Magpies need reinforcements in that position, with Callum Wilson likely to leave at the end of June.

Liam Delap was a Newcastle target, but he has snubbed Eddie Howe’s side in favour of a £30million move to Chelsea.

In Jonathan David, Newcastle United could get an even better striker on a free.

It has been confirmed that David is leaving Lille on a free transfer, with clubs from across Europe desperate to strike a deal for the Canadian forward.

Jonathan David sets out transfer demand

The 25-year-old is yet to make a final decision regarding his next move.

However, the latest comments from David suggest that Newcastle United could be the perfect club for him.

“I want a club with ambition that wants to do something,” he told the Athletic.

“Obviously, I would love to fight for titles, to win titles. A team that’s competitive, that has ambition, really, with a good sporting project.”

When you talk about sporting projects, there are few more exciting than Newcastle United.

PIF want Newcastle to become an elite club, and have a plan in place to make that dream a reality.

They are planning to build a new Newcastle United stadium, where they will hope that the Magpies regularly compete in the Champions League and challenge for honours.

Newcastle United are very much a club that wants to ‘do something’, which is what David is looking for.

The wrong time for Newcastle United and Jonathan David

However, David is not on course to become part of the PIF project at St James’ Park.

Newcastle have enquired about David, but he looks set to snub a move to the Premier League in favour of heading to Italy.

Napoli and Juventus are battling it out to sign the striker on a free transfer.

That is a shame for the Magpies, as getting a player of David’s calibre on a free would be quite the coup.

However, it is David’s incredible ability that always made a move to Tyneside unlikely.

Whichever striker arrives at Newcastle United this summer will know that they are always going to be second choice behind Alexander Isak. As long as Eddie Howe uses just one striker, it will be Isak who is primarily leading the line.

While Newcastle may be open to the idea of two forwards, David is a player who is good enough to be starting every single week at the highest level. He would not be guaranteed that luxury at Newcastle United.

David ticks so many boxes for Newcastle United, and his desire to join a club with an exciting project would suggest that Newcastle United tick so many boxes for him. However, the only chance of him wearing black and white next season appears to be if Juventus can win the race to sign him.
