Arsenal could get the opportunity to sign a player from the grasp of a Premier League rival.

Arsenal could yet hijack Unai Emery and Aston Villa’s deal to sign a player the Gunners have regularly been linked with in the past. The Gunners have a big summer ahead of them as they look to bridge the gap between themselves and the champions Liverpool after a disappointing campaign.

Mikel Arteta needs more quality and depth as he looks to deliver silverware, and given the level of investment over recent years, the Spaniard just might have to deliver silverware.

There are a number of areas Arsenal need to strengthen, and they are already free to do so, at least until June 10, with a special early window currently open ahead of the regular window opening later this month.

The Gunners are searching high and low for a striker, while they are also likely to want a winger, midfielder, defender and back-up goalkeeper. One area they should probably consider adding depth to is the attacking midfield role. We saw at the start of the season just gone that when Martin Odegaard is injured, there is a clear void, with Leandro Trossard not offering the same level of creativity.

That is perhaps why there have been reports of Arsenal being interested in a player dubbed ‘the next Martin Odegaard’. That player is Sverre Halseth Nypan, who is said to be available for around £10million from Rosenborg this summer. Nypan is still only 18 years of age, but there is excitement aplenty over his potential.

According to The Athletic, Aston Villa were closing in on a deal, with the club’s recruitment staff working hard to convince the player of their project, even presenting to the midfielder’s family. But it has been reported that there are ‘severe doubts’ over whether a deal can be reached, with the player yet to give his approval.

That could give Arsenal the window they need to step in and snatch away a deal to add much needed depth behind Odegaard, and with one of his compatriots.

What Nypan has said

Asked about his future at the back end of last year, Nypan said: “If you go to a slightly smaller club, but which is higher ranked than Rosenborg, there is no guarantee that you will get to play or do so. Going the long way does not mean that you will succeed anyway. Of course, it’s more difficult to break into a big team, but I don’t think it’s that easy no matter where you go.”

Revealing his diligent transfer approach, the young talent added: “If a transfer is approaching or there is a club that seems very interesting, then we might go down and see what it is like there, and say hello to people. I’m not going to sign anywhere until I’ve been there and seen for myself. That goes without saying.” It’s worth noting that the Norwegian season is still in its infancy, so arranging a transfer is not as easy as it often is at this time of year, with Nypan naturally involved in games and preparations for them during the week.
