Everton tipped to beat new Premier League rival to best player in Championship

Former Aston Villa and England midfielder Lee Hendrie believes Everton would be the perfect destination for Sheffield United star Gustavo Hamer

Everton may have got their summer transfer business up and running with the permanent signing of Carlos Alcarez. But there is so much more that needs to be done.

The futures of Idrissa Gueye, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Michael Keane and Seamus Coleman need solving given they now have less than a month to run on their current Blues deals - and that's before the club attempts to address the contract issues that are going quietly under the radar.

But whether that quartet stay or go - the mood music over Gueye looks good while manager David Moyes has already confirmed he wants club captain Coleman to remain - Everton will still need to bring in a fair amount of news faces given the number of players who have left the club since the end of the season.

To that end the Blues are getting linked with potential signings left, right and centre. This week alone they have been credited with interest in Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Matt O'Riley, Rangers favourite Mohamed Diomande, Burnley centre-back Maxime Esteve and Sunderland right-back Trai Hume among many others.

One of the others is Sheffield United midfielder Gustavo Hamer, who was named the Championship Player of the Year after scoring 10 goals and racking up eight assists.

Those numbers were ultimately not enough to help the Blades secure promotion back to the Premier League as they lost the play-off final to Sunderland in heartbreaking fashion at Wembley.

That has led to questions over the future of Hamer, who turns 28 later this month. At a key juncture in his career, there is a fear at Bramall Lane that they could lose him to a Premier League club.

Everton have been linked as well as Leeds United, who won the Championship and will return to the top-flight next season along with Sunderland and Burnley, who finished second.

And speaking exclusively to Football League World, former Aston Villa and England midfielder Lee Hendrie has been discussing who Hamer should sign for.

"I think what Moyes has done at Everton has been quite phenomenal," said the Sky Sports pundit.

"With Everton being more established as a Premier League side, I think they would be the more tempting move. But Leeds has all that potential and are such a big football club.

"You're talking about two big football clubs that have got such a good support.

"With Everton, surviving this season and having a good, strong finish to the campaign, you do feel that after moving into their new stadium, they would probably be the firmer club that I would be looking to go to.

"We've seen the teams coming up out of the Championship not being able to survive and getting relegated straight back down, which would always be a bit of a red flag in my eyes.

"Even though I feel that Leeds will have a big push next season, Everton would be my choice."
