The last decade, you blink, and it’s gone by. It feels like I was a rookie, like, a year or two ago. I’m having a lot of flashbacks from that rookie season. I don’t know if it’s a good thing, or not, that a decade’s gone by so quick, but it’s been cool.”Hus is entering his 11th year — and officially 10th season — with the Riders.“Technically 11 (if you count the COVID year) — 10 years in training camp,” he correctly points out.At age 35, he is one of the Riders’ elder statesmen, and currently the longest-serving Rider. Who would have thought?“It’s just crazy,” Hus admits. “My goal, when I first got here, was to play at least a decade. I remember sitting in my locker my rookie year and making that goal. And here we are, 10 years later, and it’s, like, ‘check.’Your Midday SunYour noon-hour look at what's happening in Toronto and beyond.By signing up you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.Thanks for signing up!A welcome email is on its way. That’s obviously the No. 1 goal, but I think this is as close of a chance we have in my time here with this team, this group.“I’m just so excited to get going.”Hus has endured yet another training camp grind. This year, the pre-season sessions were split between his Saskatoon hometown and Regina. How have things changed at camp over the years?“Not a lot,” he says. “When I first came in, the league was just phasing out of those two-a-day (sessions). Now they’re just longer (single-practice sessions). They really try to take care of their bodies. They measure everything. Guys have got GPS’s and stuff like that. They’re a little more cognizant on how your body is doing. Other than that, it’s football.”Advertisement 5Article contentLONG SNAPPING A TICKET TO PRO FOOTBALLIt’s football. And that means hiking footballs time and time again.Flashback to his junior football days with the Hilltops and U Sports career with the University of Regina Rams. That’s when Hus, then a linebacker, realized he could play professional football as a long-snapping specialist.“I remember a coach told me in high school that this could be your ticket to the pros,” recalls Hus. “Then I started to take it seriously after that, all through the Hilltops. I actually tore my knee and I missed a year, but it was a blessing in disguise because I couldn’t do all the other things, but I could snap.“So I just snapped and snapped and I ended up working with a coach down south. By the time I got to the U of R Rams, it was like, ‘this can happen. Let’s just keep continuing on the pace we’re going, and then we can make something of it.’Advertisement 6Article content“Then I got drafted in 2013, and then did the NFL tour for a couple of years before coming back up north.“I would say it was that transition of going from Hilltops to Rams when I knew I had a shot.”HUS HAD SOME NFL TRYOUTSHus initially signed with the NFL’s St. Louis Rams (before they moved to Los Angeles) as an undrafted free agent. He spent training camp and NFL pre-season with the Rams before being released. From there, he had tryouts with a number of NFL teams including the Seattle Seahawks, Rams for a second time, Kansas City Chiefs.“It was fun,” Hus says, in summary. He had the longest look with the Rams, taking part in OTAs (Organized Team Activities), training camp and pre-season in 2013 after signing with them at the end of that year’s draft.Advertisement 7Article content“I was super excited,” he says. “It was a huge jump going from CIS (U Sports) to NFL for long-snapping, Now you’ve got to snap and block, so you’ve got to work backwards instead of sprinting forward like you did in CIS. There were a lot of changes, and it happened real fast. That adjustment took about a year or so.”From there he was fielding calls and he auditioned with the Seahawks, Rams and Kansas City before settling back in Saskatchewan with his home-province team. While Hus has admitted to some of his former Hilltop colleagues that he had started to ponder possible retirement, the Grey Cup potential of the current Rider squad could prolong those thoughts for a while.“I’m getting towards the end,” admits Hus. “But with what we’ve got in this group, this is the best roster I believe I’ve been a part of. So I can’t wait to see how it goes.Advertisement 8Article content“If it was a rebuilding year, then maybe it’s a little bit different. But I wanted to play this year regardless. I’m getting towards the end. We’ll finish this year and take it year-by-year at this point.”dzary@postmedia.comRead More Practice roster-bound Anderson looked to escape final cuts as potential team barber This Aussie is more than a mere punter The Big Question: How will the Riders do in 2025?
