Chelsea are expected to explore a move for a striker even after the arrival of Liam Delap with Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike one option.
Following their top-five Premier League finish and thus Champions League qualification, Delap opted for a move to Stamford Bridge over Manchester United from Ipswich Town with his medical completed on Monday and £30million paid for his services. An announcement is therefore expected to arrive this week.
Once confirmation has arrived, full focus will almost certainly move onto wrapping up other additions in time for the Club World Cup, but it certainly looks as though that priority switch has already been made.
football.london understands the Blues want to sign Jamie Gittens before the tournament in the United States begins with an approach also made to AC Milan for Mike Maignan. On the latter, there are reservations about their £25million asking price considering he has just 12 months remaining on his contract with the Serie A giants.
If a compromise is met however and those two deals are agreed, the majority of Chelsea's business will be complete. That likely just leaves decisions to be made on whether or not to bring in a few more experienced players with Enzo Maresca admitting he wants that.
Viktor Gyokeres or Victor Osimhen would certainly do that in the attacking third but Ekitike is the name that continues to be mentioned. The 22-year-old has been a bright spark in a great season for Frankfurt which saw them qualify for the Champions League after finishing third in the Bundesliga.
Ekitike scored 15 goals in that competition with a further seven arriving across the German Cup and Europa League. Those returns have unsurprisingly seen transfer interest emerge with Liverpool also keeping tabs on his situation, but it will cost suitors a significant amount to sign him.
Sky Sports Germany's Florian Plettenberg has stated on several occasions that Frankfurt are demanding a whopping £84million (€100m) to sell him this summer.
Ekitike had the chance to justify or even increase that price at the upcoming under-21 European championships but injury will mean he misses out.
The French Football Federation announced that as he reported to Clairefontaine training with back pain, which has carried over from the end of the club season, Soungoutou Magassa and Djaoui Cisse have been called up as replacements with Enzo Millot also having departed.
With interested clubs denied another chance to see him in action, they will have to go off what was on display over the last nine months and that could actually be concerning.
That is because he has the biggest xG underperformance from the Bundesliga with those 15 goals arriving from an xG of 22.55.
