Wolverhampton Wanderers expert Rosie Tudball provides insight on Tommy Doyle

Birmingham will allow Marc Leonard to leave on loan but it is unlikely that Wrexham will revive their interest in the midfielder given the rivalry between the two clubs and their step up in quality.

Doyle now seems a likely candidate alongside Fulham’s Tom Cairney to come into the midfield area and Wolves expert Tudball has reflected on the player’s qualities and given her thoughts on what Wrexham can expect.

What are Tommy Doyle’s strengths as a player?

Doyle is a strong playmaker and a brilliant ball player with an eye for goal, in central areas he works tirelessly hard both on and off the ball and is a positive player to have in a possession-based side.

What are Tommy Doyle’s weaknesses as a player?

Defensively, Doyle isn’t the best, so for a central midfielder, he certainly needs to work on that area of his game. His physicality has also been questioned at Wolves, so having him playing as an eight with a deeper midfielder beside him is essential.

Wrexham play a 3-5-2 formation, where could you see him fitting in best?

As mentioned, Doyle is best suited to a number-eight type role, playing off those behind him in midfield to generate play to those ahead of him. In a 3-5-2, he could be considered a natural successor to a player of Matty James’ profile.

Do you think Doyle could still play in the Premier League?

Yes, Doyle is a player capable of playing regularly in the Premier League, but perhaps not just yet.

After an unfortunate 2024/25 campaign, it’s thought around Wolves that perhaps a step back to the Championship could give the Englishman the confidence to revisit parts of his game on show at Sheffield United that have been restricted at Molineux.

Could you rate Doyle out of 10 as a signing for Wrexham?

What Wrexham could get from Doyle could be pivotal to putting together a successful Championship campaign. You only have to look at what he did at Sheffield United to see just how impactful he could be, Wolves were certainly drawn towards his progressive strengths.

To rate a possible signing, I’d give an 8/10, I think his individual quality and IQ, learned from Man City’s academy, could give Wrexham the edge compared to others in his position in the second tier.

Tommy Doyle’s Championship record

Doyle has featured on 24 occasions for Wolves in the top flight this season but performances have been inconsistent and as mentioned by Tudball, his physicality has been questioned.

However, the 23-year-old has a wealth of experience in the Championship following spells with Sheffield United and Cardiff and would be seen as a statement signing for the Red Dragons.

Parkinson wants to keep a winning mentality throughout his squad this summer but will need quality additions to bolster options.

Doyle would be a player that would slot straight into Wrexham’s first-team and elevate their ability to keep possession and dictate games on their terms.
