Arsenal season 2024/25: A tale of what might have been

Arsenal went into the 2024/25 season with high hopes of winning silverware, and the first few months of the campaign raised hopes that they would get the job done.

However, the club ultimately ended up empty-handed, despite competing well in the Premier League and making deep runs in two other competitions.

Despite the disappointments, fans continued to clamour for Arsenal tickets on Seatsnet.com last season, with the club recording an average attendance of 60,252 in 19 league games at the Emirates Stadium.

Read on as we look back at Arsenal’s campaign, starting with what ultimately became another hugely frustrating Premier League campaign.

Having amassed 84 and 89 points in the previous two seasons, many pundits predicted that Arsenal were ready to end their title drought.

However, the club’s failure to fill a yawning gap in the squad ultimately caught up with them, and they finished in second place for the third successive year.

Arsenal lost four games during the campaign – the same as eventual champions Liverpool – but 14 draws scuppered their hopes of claiming top spot.

The Gunners’ lack of a prolific striker resulted in them dropping points at crucial stages of the campaign, and they ended the season 10 points adrift of the Reds.

While injuries to several key players did not help their cause, not signing a reliable goalscorer was ultimately the primary reason why they came up short.

Arsenal drew twice with Liverpool to demonstrate they could compete with them, but their title challenge was undoubtedly a case of what might have been.

Quarter-Final – Apr 8/16 – Real Madrid – W5-1 on aggregate

Semi-Final – Apr 29/May 7 – Paris Saint-Germain – L3-1 on aggregate

Aside from a defeat against Inter Milan in the opening phase, Arsenal were largely untroubled on their way to the knockout stage.

They produced a dominant display against PSV Eindhoven in the last 16, before putting reigning champions Real Madrid to the sword in the quarter-finals.

However, they were deservedly defeated by PSG in their last four tie, leaving the impression that they had peaked too soon in the competition.

Midfielder Declan Rice dominated against Madrid, but was left chasing shadows in each of the two games against the Ligue 1 champions.

Despite manager Mikel Arteta claiming Arsenal were the better team, PSG deserved their victory and subsequently demonstrated their quality by obliterating Inter in the final.

FA Cup 2024/25

Third Round – Jan 12 – Arsenal 1-1 Manchester United (aet L5-3 on penalties)

Arsenal blew a golden opportunity to progress in the FA Cup after failing to capitalise on Diogo Dalot’s 61st-minute red card.

Manchester United defended doggedly to force the game to a penalty shoot-out and eventually emerged victorious after Kai Havertz missed his spot kick.

League Cup 2024/25

Third Round – Sep 25 – Arsenal 5-1 Bolton Wanderers

Fourth Round – Oct 30 – Preston North End 0-3 Arsenal

Quarter-Final – Dec 18 – Arsenal 3-2 Crystal Palace

Semi-Final – Jan 7/Feb 5 – Newcastle United – L4-0 on aggregate

After breezing through their first couple of games in the League Cup, the Gunners were pushed a little harder by Crystal Palace in the quarter-final.

However, Arteta’s side held on to secure a 3-2 victory and book their place in the semi-final against Newcastle United.

Many fans were confident that they could start searching for Liverpool tickets for the final at Wembley Stadium, but things did not go to plan.

The Magpies produced a defensive masterclass to record a 2-0 win at the Emirates Stadium, and they completed the job by recording another 2-0 victory on home soil.

Eddie Howe’s side subsequently upset the odds by defeating Liverpool in the final, further adding to the sense of frustration felt by Arsenal fans.
