Former Manchester United midfielder parts ways with club

Manchester United’s summer transfer plans continue to take shape as the club looks to rebuild after a challenging season.

The Premier League campaign ended with United missing out on European qualification, forcing the Red Devils to rethink their squad strategy.

Manager Ruben Amorim is eager to strengthen the team with new signings while ensuring a solid backroom staff remains in place.

Meanwhile, across the Championship, a notable change has occurred which could have indirect implications for United’s coaching network.

Middlesbrough, under the stewardship of Michael Carrick, have parted ways with their manager following a mixed spell in charge, as per Keith Downie via X.

The 43-year-old met with Middlesbrough chiefs this morning — including owner Steve Gibson — where he was informed of his future.

Michael Carrick, a former Manchester United midfielder turned manager, was the longest-serving boss in the Championship before Middlesbrough decided to terminate his contract.

Despite signing a fresh three-year deal last summer, the 42-year-old failed to guide Boro into the play-offs in either of his last two seasons.

Middlesbrough finished tenth last term, just four points shy of a play-off spot, after a late-season slump where they won only one of their final six games.

The campaign had been streaky, with impressive attacking displays—particularly when Liverpool loanee Ben Doak was fit—but ultimately lacked the consistency required for a top-six finish.

Chairman Steve Gibson and the board conducted a full review following a final-day defeat to Coventry City, which confirmed their decision to part ways with Carrick.

This came as a surprise, given Carrick’s optimistic public statements shortly after the loss, where he had spoken of continuing and building on the existing squad.

However, the club has opted to move in a new direction.

Carrick was linked to the West Ham United job last year but that ultimately withered away.

Carrick’s reputation as a coach remains strong.

Well respected by players and praised for his clear football philosophy, he is expected to attract interest from clubs looking for a promising manager.

His departure from Middlesbrough is likely to reignite speculation about a possible return to Manchester United’s coaching setup or a new challenge elsewhere.
