Middlesbrough have decided to part ways with manager Michael Carrick after an underwhelming season that saw them miss out on the play-offs. The news, confirmed on Wednesday afternoon, also means the departure of two former Newcastle United favourites.

Carrick's brother Graeme left the Magpies in June 2024, bringing an end to his two-year stint as Newcastle's Under-18's manager. The coach was thanked by Academy Director, Steve Harper, as he departed, with the former goalkeeper describing his work on Tyneside as 'excellent'.

Former Newcastle defender Jonathan Woodgate has also been relieved from his position after the Carrick announcement, vacating his role as Boro's first-team coach. The 45-year-old enjoyed spells at both north east clubs during his playing career, while also managing Middlesbrough between 2019 and 2020.

"We'd like to thank Michael, Jonathan, and Graeme for all their hard work and unwavering commitment. We wish them all the very best for the future," the Riverside club said in a statement confirming their exits.

Both Graeme and Michael are Wallsend natives who began their footballing careers in the north east. Graeme's youth career came to an abrupt end during his time at West Ham United, before he moved into a coaching role with Newcastle.

His return almost two decades later was celebrated, with Carrick taking charge of the Magpies' youth stars as he sought to develop talents for the future. His exit, to join Michael on Teesside, was a blow to the black and whites.

As for Boro, attention now turns to who the Championship outfit could opt to replace Carrick. Rob Edwards, Steven Gerrard, Danny Rohl and Sean Dyche have emerged as early contenders for the job.
