Man City have entered the 2025 summer transfer window intending to sign a new right-back.
Pep Guardiola is keen to add four or five new faces to his squad ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, and two positions he wants to address are right-back and left-back.
Man City are currently pushing for their top target for the left side of their defence as the Manchester club are trying to agree personal terms with Wolves’ Rayan Ait-Nouri, before approaching the Midlands club with a formal offer.
When it comes to adding a right-back, things have proven a little difficult with Fabrizio Romano recently stating that Man City are waiting to see if they can sign Tino Livramento from Newcastle this summer.
Should they fail to acquire the services of the Magpies star, Guardiola is happy to use one of his current players in the role at the FIFA Club World Cup, with the Spanish coach set to take the future of the position from there.

Pep Guardiola was impressed by Matheus Nunes last season
After Kyle Walker left Man City to join AC Milan on loan for the second half of the 2024/25 campaign, Guardiola was left to look for solutions and opted to put one of the fastest players in the Premier League, Matheus Nunes, in the role.

Man City plan to replace Walker this summer, however, The Telegraph is reporting that Hugo Viana has hit a wall in his search for a new right-sided defender as Newcastle don’t plan to sell Livramento, while a move is yet to be made for Juventus’ Andrea Cambiaso.
“There is interest in Tino Livramento, but Newcastle United are determined to keep the England right-back, while nothing has materialised yet with Juventus’ Andrea Cambiaso,” Mike McGrath wrote.
The journalist would also go on to say: “Guardiola was happy with Matheus Nunes’ performances at right-back towards the end of the season and could use the Portugal international there for the Club World Cup in America.”
Man City have been impressed with Nunes at right-back this season, and the Portuguese star is a good option short-term for the FIFA Club World Cup, however, right-back is a situation the Manchester club need to address as soon as possible.

Right-backs Man City could sign this summer
If Livramento is not an option for Man City, the Premier League club can still make a move for Cambiaso, which is a step the report says the Manchester club are yet to make.
That may be due to some doubts over the Italian, however, Man City also have Flamengo’s Wesley on their list, who is a player City were said to be pushing for last month.
Player Games Goals Assists Minutes
Wesley Franca 23 1 2 1915
Tino Livramento 45 0 1 3459
Andrea Cambiaso 42 2 5 2895
Matheus Nunes 39 4 10 2680
Closer to home, Tottenham’s Pedro Porro could be an option, but like Newcastle, the Spaniard will be hard to acquire as Spurs will not want to lose their best players, having returned to the Champions League.
Whatever happens over the coming weeks, Man City need to come out of the other side with a new right-back, as addressing the problem now is crucial for the future of the Manchester club.
