Deciding to keep or sell every single player from Manchester United - opinion

After a damaging season, Manchester United face their biggest rebuild yet, with Ruben Amorim expected to lead major changes at the club.

Ruben Amorim and his Man United side have shown glimpses of what the future could look like, but they have to take it up a level next season.

To do this, Amorim is going to have to be ruthless in making big decisions, which he has already proved he isn’t afraid to do when deciding to loan Marcus Rashford to Aston Villa.

There has already been speculation about some big-name players leaving Old Trafford this summer, with Alejandro Garnacho one being tipped for a United exit.

The Red Devils have already signed Matheus Cunha, and if they want more new faces before the season starts, they’ll have to trim their wage bill quickly.

With that being said, there are players who they’ll be desperate to keep hold of too, so let’s assess what United should do with their players this summer.

Andre Onana – Sell

It just hasn’t worked out for Andre Onana since joining United in 2023.

While he had a better season in his first year at the club, the cracks were starting to show in some games, and it’s all come falling down this campaign.

Onana has made consistent errors that have overshadowed the odd remarkable reflex save, and United should be looking to sell and find a reliable number one for the forthcoming season.

Atlay Bayindir – Sell

Due to Onana’s poor form, back-up goalkeeper Atlay Bayindir was called into action by Amorim on a few occasions.

Fans were optimistic about the Turkish star getting another opportunity, since he only made one appearance the season prior.

However, disastrous performances against Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup and the league against Newcastle United have proven that he isn’t quite ready to be a reliable goalkeeper when called upon at this level.

Tom Heaton – Keep

At 39 years of age, Tom Heaton has been in plenty of dressing rooms in his lengthy career and is known as an important figure behind the scenes at United.

A ‘goalkeeper union’ is always good, and if United were to bring in two new goalkeepers, they would surely benefit from Heaton’s experience.

Patrick Dorgu – Keep

Patrick Dorgu was one of Amorim’s first signings, bringing the Denmark international to the club in January from Serie A side Lecce.

The young wing-back fits Amorim’s style of play and has already racked up twenty appearances for the Red Devils.

Dorgu has been compared to Gareth Bale, as he possesses raw qualities such as explosive speed and strength, and with time he could turn out to be a revelation of a signing for United.

Luke Shaw – Sell

Luke Shaw has been critiqued for fitness issues for what seems an age now, as the once exciting youth prospect has been sidelined for lengthy spells during several seasons for United.

His injury setbacks will prevent him from excelling as a wing-back in Amorim’s system, and although he has been deployed as a left-sided centre-back, both parties should be looking for a change this summer.

Tyrell Malacia – Sell

It feels like the ship has sailed between Tyrell Malacia and Man United for some time now.

The Dutchman was an Erik ten Hag signing and impressed in his first season, but then missed the entirety of the 23/24 season.

Malacia made eight appearances up till January this season, and was loaned out to Dutch outfit PSV, where he has seen limited game-time.

A permanent switch to a new club should be on Malacia’s mind, and United should definitely be looking to get him off the books this summer.

Harry Amass – Loan

Having worked his way up the ranks at Carrington, Harry Amass was handed his Premier League debut this season, which was followed by six other appearances across the league and even the Europa League.

The pacy wing-back could well be one for the future under Amorim, but for now, he shouldn’t be relied on as a back-up, with a loan move being the smart choice this window.

Matthijs de Ligt – Keep

Matthijs de Ligt hasn’t pulled up any trees since arriving from Bayern Munich.

Another Ten Hag signing, United sought a successful reunion between the former Ajax pair; however, a hot and cold campaign saw De Ligt come under fire in certain games, but he also showed his quality in others.

Man United will be hoping De Ligt can live up to his potential, and a full pre-season under Amorim could do him the world of good.

Harry Maguire – Keep

Harry Maguire is finally getting the flowers he deserves at United after being tormented online for so many years.

Maguire has stepped up in the last two seasons and should be one of the only players who leaves with his head held high going into the summer break.

Lisandro Martinez – Keep

With the Argentine being kept out until 2026, Man United will have to keep Lisandro Martinez until next season’s January transfer window.

If it wasn’t for his injury, he would be on the sell list, as United could use the good money they would get for him to spend on an improvement.

Leny Yoro – Keep

After an unfortunate start to his United career, Leny Yoro has since come back from a nasty injury that he picked up in pre-season to show promise on several occasions for United.

Yoro set an impressive stat for himself at United, and with a full pre-season behind him that isn’t disrupted by injury, the teenager could storm into the start of the 25/26 season.

Ayden Heaven – Loan

Youngster Ayden Heaven was brought to the club in January along with Dorgu and has since been thrown into the deep end on a couple of occasions, having only played once in his professional career prior.

United should be looking at loaning the former Arsenal youth star to the Championship in an attempt to keep his momentum going, whilst toughening him up a little.

Noussair Mazraoui – Keep

Yet another former player who worked under Ten Hag at Ajax, Noussair Mazraoui appeared a whopping 57 times in his first season as a United player.

The Moroccan has appeared across the defensive line this season and further up the field on occasions, proving to be a smart bit of business.

Mazraoui should be one of the first names on the team sheet come the start of next season and one that the team needs to be built around.

Diogo Dalot – Sell

This is undoubtedly a controversial one but some Man United fans may need to face the facts.

Portuguese wing-back Diogo Dalot has been at the club since 2018, and while we have seen him steadily progress, it feels like at 26, his development has stagnated, and he may have reached his ceiling.

Amorim’s unbeatable Sporting CP side was known for its explosive full-backs, and he is looking to try and replicate that successful formula at United, bringing in the likes of Dorgu.

While a technically gifted player, Dalot is limited in speed and attacking decision-making, and United would certainly get a pretty penny for their long-serving player that they could use to try and find a replacement more suited to the system.

It all depends on the type of leap United look to take, as Dalot would certainly be a good option as things stand for next season, with his versatility on offer, but it would be an ambitious move to replace him.

Casemiro – Sell

With United openly expressing their wishes to cut costs at the club, it’s highly likely that Casemiro has played his last game at Old Trafford.

While the Brazilian’s performances improved in the second half of the season, Casemiro has been criticised for poor performances for the best part of his United career.

With the direction the club are going, it would be best for Casemiro and United to part ways this summer.

Manuel Ugarte – Keep

After a rough start to life in a United shirt, Manuel Ugarte has been impressive since the arrival of Amorim.

The Uruguayan midfielder has all the tools needed to be an elite-level holding midfielder, and if he can carry his end-of-season performances into next campaign, he could be one of the stand-out midfielders in the league.

Kobbie Mainoo – Keep

A stop-start season has seen Kobbie Mainoo sidelined for two large periods, ultimately disrupting his momentum that he had from his breakout campaign last year.

His standout moments were in the Europa League, particularly his 120th-minute equaliser in United’s epic comeback against Lyon.

Mainoo is another player who will surely benefit from a full pre-season under Amorim and the bonus of an improved squad next year.

Toby Collyer – Loan

Injuries paved the way for youth midfielder Toby Collyer to make his first appearances for United this year, making 13 in total.

He showed promising signs but is clearly out of his depth at an elite level currently, and needs a positive loan move to get a full year of professional football at 21.

Mason Mount – Sell

Since making the switch from Chelsea in 2023, Mason Mount has had two injury-ravaged seasons with United.

The former England international hasn’t found much success at Old Trafford, having only netted on four occasions.

Mount started to feature more under Amorim towards the end of the season, and he had one or two performances which showed he still has the quality to be a difference maker, which might tempt clubs into making a move for him.

United should look to cut their losses with Mount and sell this summer.

Bruno Fernandes – Keep

Where would Man United be without Bruno Fernandes?

Fernandes has been United’s star man ever since he joined the club in 2020, and has had yet another stellar individual campaign this year.

There has been speculation about Fernandes leaving Man United, however, the Portuguese magician looks set to stay at Old Trafford for at least another year, according to Fabrizio Romano’s update:

🚨 Bruno Fernandes: “Al Hilal for me was an easy move, even at a family level… I had João Cancelo there. But I want to maintain myself at the highest level”.

Amad Diallo – Keep

United were keen on extending Amad Diallo’s contract last season, and after his impressive performances this year, he was awarded with a new contract in January.

The Ivorian has been a stand-out player this season, impressing in the first half of the season before blossoming under Amorim in the second half of the season.

Amad is one of the most important players to United right now, and there is no way they will be looking to sell him this summer.

Alejandro Garnacho – Sell

Academy graduate Alejandro Garnacho once filled United fans with promise after fearless performances when he first broke out.

However, with Garnacho’s comments after United’s Europa League final defeat, followed by the reports of Amorim’s dig at the Argentine in front of teammates, it is only a matter of time before the pacy winger heads for the exit doors at United.

Antony – Sell

Antony will be returning to United after a loan with Real Betis, which has revived the Brazilian’s form and mental health.

It’s hard to believe that Antony will be playing in United colours ever again, after he emotionally opened up about his “dark” time at United when speaking to TNT Sports Brazil.

After his sparkling form at Real Betis, United have thrown themselves a lifeline in recouping a chunk of the £80m they forked out on him, when at one point he looked a lost cause.

Jadon Sancho – Sell

Chelsea have opted against signing Jadon Sancho for £25m, with the Blues now having to send £5m in compensation to United.

It’s most likely that Sancho will be another man axed from the squad to help Amorim have a team full of players suited to his formation next season.

Sancho is an out-and-out winger, leaving little wiggle room to be fit in Amorim’s plans, making a summer exit highly likely.

Joshua Zirkzee – Keep

Another Dutchman who was brought in for Ten Hag was striker Joshua Zirkzee, who started the season with a bang, scoring a late winner against Fulham on the opening day of the season.

Since then, he has only managed to find the net another six times, having some rough patches in a United shirt, but bouncing back towards the end of the season.

Since Amorim’s arrival, Zirkzee looks more familiar with his teammates, creating some good link-up play, something United fans will be looking forward to more of next season, alongside Cunha and potentially Bryan Mbuemo.

Chido Obi-Martin – Loan

People have waxed lyrical on Chido Obi-Martin’s youth goal-scoring record, and United fans will be desperate to see him fulfil his potential.

After already making a handful of cameos, it’s clear to see Obi-Martin should be sent on loan to kick-start his promising career.

Marcus Rashford – Sell

One of United’s own, Marcus Rashford, once destined to become a United legend, is more likely than ever to leave his boyhood club this summer.

Rashford has options this summer, and after his impressive form on loan at Aston Villa, there’s no doubt clubs will do what they can for the forward’s signature this window.

Rasmus Hojilund – Sell

On the back of a decent first season at United, Rasmus Hojilund has failed to make a step up this season, and could be another one headed for the door.

The jury is out over Hojilund’s United future, as it’s possible Amorim could keep the Dane around in hopes he can reach heights once expected of him, but it is one story that is to be closely followed this transfer window.

“The good days are coming”, says Amorim

In his post-match speech in United’s final Premier League game, Amorim reassured the United fans that “The good days are coming”, ahead of Man United’s potential biggest ever rebuild in the club’s history.

Tough decisions will need to be made, but Amorim is determined to make Man Utd great again.
