Kingsley Coman has had one of his least injury plagued seasons this year, racking up 41 appearances on all competitions. Nevertheless, this has not seen him rewarded with a spot in the France national team. Instead, the former Juventus FC player was only called up once in the 4 international breaks during the season and has not been called up to France’s June matches in the UEFA Nations League. Given he plays fairly regularly for Bayern Munich, one of the world’s superpower teams, why is Coman being excluded?
Speaking to Sport Bild, France head coach Didier Deschamps explained his thought process.
“I know what he’s capable of. But it’s also about giving younger players playing time so they can gain experience,” Deschamps said, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “Generally speaking, Kingsley Coman has had bad luck in his career, with the numerous injuries that have repeatedly set him back. However, that hasn’t stopped him from winning many titles.”
Ultimately, this France attack is full of talent. Furthermore, the likes of Ousmane Dembélé has enjoyed an extraordinary season while youngsters Désiré Doué and Michael Olise have enjoyed breakthrough campaigns. Coman’s competition in the French national team is terrifyingly elite. Perhaps that is why he has a hard time getting game time for his country.
