Julian Nagelsmann has given the nod for Florian Wirtz to represent Germany amidst swirling rumours of a potential transfer to Liverpool.

The 22-year-old midfielder, who is currently in discussions over a stunning move from Bayer Leverkusen to Anfield, isn't being distracted by the ongoing talks, says the national team gaffer.

Wirtz is prepping for Germany's UEFA Nations League semi-final clash against Portugal, even as Liverpool's chase intensifies.

Despite Leverkusen batting away two hefty bids from the Merseyside heavyweights, who reckon Wirtz is worth a staggering £126million, Nagelsmann remains cool and ready to field Wirtz on international duty.

Nagelsmann put any worries to bed on Tuesday, confirming Wirtz's readiness: "Flo will play [against Portugal]. I don't sense any fear of injury or anything with him. He's a competitor who wants to play and be successful with us.

"I didn't notice that the situation was bothering him. I think it's perfectly normal for every player, coach, whatever, to have one or two thoughts when a transfer is imminent. I think that's part of it.", reports the Express.

With Bayern Munich and Manchester City out of the picture, Liverpool are the sole contenders in the race for Wirtz, who has thrived under the guidance of Xabi Alonso, a much-loved former Liverpool star.

Fans are encouraged to join the conversation about Liverpool's odds of landing Wirtz.

On Tuesday, news broke that Arne Slot had a chinwag with Rayan Cherki, who's also on Liverpool's radar, honouring a promise made before the club advanced talks for their prime target Wirtz. Wirtz is still at the top of their wishlist.

Nagelsmann has piped up to say that the transfer tittle-tattle isn't messing with Wirtz's head. Yet, the lad himself chimed in on the gossip claiming he's after the number 10 shirt at Liverpool.

That coveted number 10 is currently sported by Reds' ace Alexis Mac Allister, who hopped over from Brighton a couple of years back.

Wirtz didn't mince his words on social media, debunking the rumours with: "Who says I want the 10. I respect players. Don't believe everything what's written," and slapping on a clown emoji for good measure.
