Michael Carrick has left Middlesbrough after just under three years in charge of the Championship club.
It turns out Manchester United aren’t the only club to suffer from a disappointing 2024/25 season.
The Red Devils endured a turbulent campaign after finishing 15th in the Premier League and losing the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur.
Ruben Amorim became head coach in November and has endured an eye-opening first six months at Old Trafford.
For former United midfielder Michael Carrick, the campaign started with an objective for Middlesbrough to clinch promotion to the Premier League.
Middlesbrough fell short of that objective, just missing out on a place in the play-offs on the final day of the season, and the club has jumped to make a major decision over Carrick’s future.

Middlesbrough sack Michael Carrick
Carrick started his coaching career with United after winning five Premier League titles in Sir Alex Ferguson’s midfield ahead of his retirement in 2018.
He worked with multiple managers, including Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, before having a spell as caretaker manager in November 2021.

Carrick left Old Trafford when Ralf Rangnick was appointed interim manager in December 2021.
In the following year, Boro offered Carrick the job after sacking Chris Wilder with the club in the relegation zone. The former United ace turned things around as they flew up the table and into promotion contention.
After reaching the play-offs in the first season in the Championship, Carrick’s Boro were beaten by Coventry City in the semi-finals.
The following two seasons, they would fall just short of the Premier League push.
Boro now feel they can make the next step without Carrick in the dugout, with the feeling they have gone backwards in recent years.
What did Middlesbrough say after dismissing Carrick?
Middlesbrough kept their statement on Carrick brief.
The Championship used the written statement to announce that Carrick’s assistants Jonathan Woodgate and Graeme Carrick (Michael’s brother) have also departed the club.
Boro’s statement read: “Michael’s assistants Jonathan Woodgate and Graeme Carrick have also departed the club.
“We’d like to thank Michael, Jonathan, and Graeme for all their hard work and unwavering commitment. We wish them all the very best for the future.
“The club will be making no further comment at this stage.”
It remains to be seen what the future holds for Carrick. It wasn’t long ago that he was tipped with taking jobs in the Premier League.
