Brentford have told Manchester United to forget about landing Bryan Mbeumo on the cheap.
United have targeted the Cameroon International and are keen to sign him in a £50m deal this summer. But the Bees value Mbeumo upwards of £60m - and are willing to hold out for the top price in what could now become a drawn-out transfer saga.
United have spent £62.5m on signing Matheus Cunha from Wolves. And the Bees value Mbeumo in the same bracket as the Brazilian international.
It's understood Bees chairman Cliff Crown is willing to dig his heels in and hold out until deadline day, if that is what it takes for United to meet the asking price. The Bees are under no pressure to sell Mbeumo, with the club holding an option to exercise an extra 12 months on his current deal, which still has one season left to run.
The London club are relaxed about Mbeumo's situation, with the pressure on United to meet their valuation if they are serious about wanting the 25-year-old. To complicate things further, Mbeumo's team-mate Yoane Wissa is the target of several Saudi Pro League clubs.

Brentford are unwilling to lose both Mbeumo and Wissa this summer, which means if the latter does secure a big-money move to a Saudi club, United face losing out on Mbeumo.
United boss Ruben Amorim is convinced Mbeumo, who scored 20 goals last season, would be an ideal fit for his future plans.
Amorim values Mbeumo's versatility, with the forward able to operate in a variety of roles across the front line, including on the right and up front.
Mbeumo's current boss at Brentford, Thomas Frank, previously spoke in 2023 about his work rate and determination, something that Amorim's side desperately lack.
He said: "[Mbeumo] must be number two after Ivan [Toney] in terms of goals and assists, which is key," and praised his exceptional work rate. "His work rate for the team is incredible.
