Seahawks coach discusses benching Sam Darnold

The Seattle Seahawks are gearing up for their first season with quarterback Sam Darnold under center following his breakout season with the Minnesota Vikings, and the Seahawks trading last season’s starter, Geno Smith, to the Las Vegas Raiders this offseason.

Unfortunately for Darnold, he had a pretty rough sequence on the first day of open OTAs, with media members in attendance reporting that Darnold threw multiple redzone interceptions.

This prompted head coach Mike Macdonald to be asked if Darnold’s role as a starter was in jeopardy, an idea he immediately shut down.

“No, no, you guys are crazy,” Macdonald said, according to Pro Football Talk. “I respect you’ve got to ask it, but it’s just a crazy question. It’s not gonna happen. Sam’s our starting quarterback. We love him. He’s doing a tremendous job.”

Fans reacted to the news on social media.

“The question was could it happen between now and the start of the season, and yes that is a crazy question,” one fan wrote on Twitter.

“They might have said the same thing about Matt Flynn a few years back,” one fan added.

“Sounds like Drew Lock making noise in training camp,” one fan added.

It’ll be interesting to see if Darnold can replicate his magic from last season.
