Report suggests Newcastle United still hold interest in 28-year-old Premier League defender -…

**Newcastle United are keen to bring down the average age of their central defender options this summer, with Dan Burn, Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles all on the wrong side of 30.**

Marc Guehi is still reportedly Eddie Howe's number one choice, and the 24-year-old would certainly tick that age box, and could prove to be a long-term defensive partner for Sven Botman.

Newcastle have cast their eyes elsewhere, and we do keep seeing many of the same names appear this year as we saw last, one of which is Liverpool's Joe Gomez.

Gomez was reported as being a player Newcastle wanted as part of a deal to take Anthony Gordon to Liverpool when that idea was floated as a way to avoid PSR sanctions last summer.

We'd take a punt on Joe Gomez

Newcastle are still interested in Liverpool's Joe Gomez

Newcastle ultimately opted to keep hold of Gordon, thankfully, although his form and attitude this season suggest we may have been better off letting him go in the eyes of some supporters.

Despite that deal not getting beyond the idea room, it seems that Newcastle do retain an interest in 28-year-old Joe Gomez, though, at least according to [Give Me Sport](https://www.givemesport.com/newcastle-want-to-sign-exceptional-premier-league-winner-in-25m-transfer/).

Gomez is probably right at the top end of the age bracket Newcastle will be looking at recruiting for their defence, but his Premier League winners medals, Champions League winners medal and 15 England caps could go some way to offset that.

Liverpool would ask £25 million for Joe Gomez

---------------------------------------------

What the collection of accolades can't mask, though, is the fact that Gomez made only nine appearances in the Premier League under Arne Slot last season.

The bulk of his absences can be explained by a hamstring injury, which kept him out for a big chunk of the season, but even when available, it was clear that Arne Slot didn't fancy him.

So, do we want a player who couldn't get into Liverpool's team, or is he still good enough for Newcastle as long as he can stay fit?

Liverpool are said to want £25 million for Gomez, and to us, that's probably worth a punt. There's absolutely a good player there, and as long as that hamstring injury hasn't left any lasting damage, we should go for it. Even if we get Marc Guehi too. Options are what we need, and those two England internationals would certainly give us that.
