Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder is having one of the best NBA seasons of all time, but is it about to get better?
In a matter of weeks, he could cap things off by winning his first championship.
If that happens, what does it mean for Gilgeous-Alexander and his place in league history?
Speaking on “The Facility,” per ClutchPoints on X, Ric Bucher talked about what all of this says about Gilgeous-Alexander.
“It would put [Shai Gilgeous-Alexander] in the conversation of top 5 point guards of all-time. Because if he wins Finals MVP, and he’s won regular season MVP, it goes to stand that he also won the championship. There’s only been two point guards in the history of the game to win regular season MVP, a championship, and be named Finals MVP. When you look at that kind of dominance in one year, I don’t know how you don’t have him in the conversation,” Bucher wrote.

Bucher noted that Magic Johnson is the only point guard to have been named regular-season MVP and Finals MVP in the same year.
If Gilgeous-Alexander is able to do that, he will earn a special place in NBA history.
Right now, it seems very possible that he will get this job done.
His team sailed through the regular season and has been sensational during the playoffs, even with their tough seven-game series against the Denver Nuggets.
Gilgeous-Alexander has done it all this season, winning a couple of trophies, putting up strong numbers, and truly becoming a superstar.
It is hard to think of another season in the past that went as well as this one.
The job is not done yet, and Gilgeous-Alexander is hard at work checking off one more box on his list.
He wants to become a champion and is just four wins away from that happening.
