Newcastle United now contemplating Premier League return for £42m Juventus man after falling…

· 4 June 2025, 18:00

**There once was a time when going to Juventus would have been seen as a no-brainer move, but lately, the Italian giants have really struggled to deliver the magic we used to associate with them.**

Nothing hammered that point home more last season than when The Old Lady took Lloyd Kelly off Newcastle United's hands. Kelly couldn't get into Newcastle's starting XI, but here he was playing regularly for Juventus.

Another player that Juve scooped out of the Premier League arrived with much more promise and a much heftier price tag.

The Serie A side picked up Douglas Luiz from Aston Villa for around £42 million last summer, but a year later, the Brazilian is eyeing a return to the Premier League, and Newcastle may grant him that wish.

Douglas Luiz - Is he the right fit for Newcastle?

Newcastle have been linked with an interest in Douglas Luiz

-----------------------------------------------------------

As reported by [GOAL](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/douglas-luiz-set-for-premier-league-return-juventus-outcast-flirts-with-newcastle-and-nottingham-for/blt3a1f1719a9cd553b#cs09cb20133c59f3c2), Newcastle and Nottingham Forest are monitoring the situation with a view to bringing the 27-year-old back to England.

Things haven't gone according to plan for Luiz since his switch last summer, and the central midfielder has fallen out of favour under Igor Tudor, failing to find the net or provide a single assist all season. Granted, he was only given 832 minutes in 26 outings across all competitions in which to do it.

Clearly, his future would be better served elsewhere, but are we sure that would be Newcastle?

It all links back to Juventus' interest in Sandro Tonali

--------------------------------------------------------

The only reason we can see Newcastle being linked with Douglas Luiz came later in GOAL's report - Juventus want Sandro Tonali. So yeah, why not? We'll have Douglas Luiz, who can't get in your side, and you can have one of our players of the season. Seems fair.

Once again, it just stinks of Newcastle's name being used to drum up genuine interest or to force a genuinely interested club to make a move.

There's no way we sacrifice Sandro Tonali, and we certainly wouldn't swap him with Luiz, who was fantastic in the Premier League - we're not denying that, but after such a poor season, it could take months for him to rediscover his form. It's not happening.
